HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sharks found themselves in a hole just under nine minutes in after a blocked Lions shot resulted in a handball in the box. The ensuing penalty kick found the bottom left corner of the net for the first score.
  • Though the Sharks didn't even register a shot until more than 18 minutes in, they certainly made their first one count, when Annie Bjork intercepted a Saint Leo throw-in and passed it to Chama Silva, who caught the defense off-guard with a right-footer into the left corner from about 25 yards out to tie the match.
  • Hardly a minute later, Bjork rebounded a blocked Jordyn Pitter attempt and sent the ball into the box for Louise Matsgard, who beat the keeper one-on-one with ease on the right edge of the net for the lead.
  • It took another 15 minutes of action for either team to attempt another shot, and the Sharks took three tries in the final 3:30 before halftime, the latter two saved by the Lions keeper.
  • While the Sharks maintained their pressure after the break, tallying eight shots throughout the period, the defense also continued to deny the Lions much at all in game-tying opportunities. Natalie Robayna faced just three attempts all half, making saves in the 59th and 69th minutes to keep the lead and hold on for the win.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • The Sharks held a 14-8 advantage in shots, with each team being on-target with exactly half of their totals.
  • Matsgard's game-winner extended her team lead this year to three such goals out of five total, which also puts her in a tie with Dani Correa for most of any NSU player.
  • All five of Matsgard's scores have come in conference play, placing her in a tie for third in the league in goals in SSC action and the leader among all freshmen.
  • Silva's goal was her third of the season, while Bjork's two assists marked the first two points of her Sharks career.
  • The last player with two assists in a game was Brianna Paige in the 7-0 win against Florida Memorial on Sept. 13, while the last such occurrence in an SSC match was Hannah Christophe in a 2-2 tie with Florida Southern on Oct. 7, 2017.

UP NEXT:
The Sharks will have a week off to prepare for Senior Night on Saturday, Oct. 30, when Embry-Riddle come to town in a game with major SSC Tournament implications.
