#22 Sharks Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker to #9 Spartans

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - No. 22 Nova Southeastern Volleyball fell just short of a second upset victory over No. 9 Tampa, losing in five-sets on Saturday afternoon from the Rick Case Arena. Earlier this season, the Sharks defeated the Spartans in Tampa, Fla., the victory set the new program-record for consecutive wins (19) for NSU Volleyball.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • NSU fell behind 4-0 to open the match, but back-to-back kills from Alex Psoma and Emily O'Neil brought the Sharks back within two against the Spartans. 
  • Julia Bernardes and Elizabeth Price sparked a 3-0 run, which tied the first-set at 6-6.  
  • UT took 5-of-7 points, putting the Sharks behind 12-18.  
  • O'Neil added three more kills, bringing the Sharks back into the first-set with the score at 19-21.  
  • Nova Southeastern led a late charge, but dropped the opening set, 23-25.  
  • NSU fell behind in the second-set, but rallied to tie the score 15-15, following a kill from Price.  
  • Brittany Landrum once again tied the set with a kill, before teaming with Kate Mihacevich to give NSU a 19-18 advantage.  
  • Psoma and Bernardes recorded back-to-back kills, putting the Sharks at set point, leading 24-22.  
  • The Sharks and Spartans battled back-and-forth in the final points of the second set; however, NSU ultimately dropped the set 28-30. 
  • Mihacevich tallied two kills, while Aleyna Kennel gave Nova Southeastern a 7-6 lead in the third set with a service ace.  
  • A 4-0 rally by NSU, capped by a Preslee Brooksbank service ace, extended the Sharks lead to 11-7.  
  • Nova Southeastern closed the third set with the final five-points, capitalizing on three Spartan errors to take the win, 25-18.  
  • The Sharks started the fourth-set with six consecutive points, with O'Neil adding three kills to her total.  
  • NSU led 11-4, following a kill from Landrum.  
  • Nova Southeastern recorded 4-of-5 points, as Price tallied three consecutive kills to give the Sharks a 21-14 advantage. 
  • Psoma finished the set win for NSU, as the Sharks rallied to tie the match 2-2, as the SSC foes went to a decisive fifth set.  
  • In the fifth-set, Mihacevich sparked a 3-0 run putting the Sharks within one, 8-9.  
  • Price tied the fifth set with her 13th kill, as NSU tied the set 13-13. 
  • The Sharks unfortunately dropped the set, and the match, losing the final-set, 13-15.
