ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Continuing its early-season road stint on Friday, the Nova Southeastern softball team split a pair of non-conference matchups, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne 4-3 before falling in walk-off fashion to Flagler by a final score of 8-5.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 2
nd | With one away in the inning,
Kerstyn Shaw sparked the NSU offense, smacking an 0-2 offering into leftfield for a double. Just one batter later, she would then come around to score as the Sharks took advantage of a Lenoir-Rhyne miscue to grab a 1-0 advantage.
TOP 3
rd | The Bears would respond in the ensuing inning, putting the first two batters aboard on a walk and an infield single. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Lenoir-Rhyne lifted a fly ball to center, knotting up the score on a sacrifice fly.
BOT 3
rd | The back-and-forth affair continued when Maddie Fine doubled down the leftfield line to score
Tia Williams from second.

th | NSU starting pitcher
Emily Hess would retire nine straight Lenoir-Rhyne hitters before the Sharks tacked on another run on a Fine single up the middle, her second RBI of the ball game.
TOP 6
th | The Sharks' 3-1 lead evaporated in the top of the sixth after the Bears followed up a lead-off hit-by-pitch with a two-run homer to left center.

th | NSU was quick to answer with
Nicole Hayslip leading off the home half of the inning with a base knock into right center. In to pinch run for Haylsip,
Haley Hendricks advanced to third in the ensuing at-bat when
Samantha Burke reached on a throwing error by the Lenoir-Rhyne third baseman. Taking advantage of the opportunity,
Ryleigh Langwell pushed Hendricks across for the eventual game-winning run on a fielder's choice.
TOP 7
th | Hess would retire the side in order to collect her second consecutive complete-game victory.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The first seven batters in the NSU lineup recorded a hit, with Fine leading the way with a 2-for-3 effort that included two RBI.
- The Sharks struck out just once in 26 official plate appearances.
- Williams, Sydney Lageyre and Alexis Smith accounted for NSU's four stolen bases.
- Hess surrendered just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out six.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The victory marked the second one-run win for the Sharks on the young season.
- The 'W' handed the Sharks their first four-game win streak since Apr. 25-28 of 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 3
rd | After both sides traded runs in the first, the Sharks regained a 2-1 lead when a Fine single was compounded by a two-base error, allowing Williams to score all the way from first.
TOP 5
th | NSU stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth, but cashed in an inning later thanks to a Shaw two-out, RBI-double.
BOT 5
th | The Saints trimmed the margin to 3-2 after the first four batters of the inning reached safely. Replacing
Ashley Connor in the circle,
Katelyn Ellard would set down the first two batters she'd face, yet wild pitch would allow Flagler to even up the ball game at 3-3. An ensuing walk would prolong the inning before the hoe team would take the lead on a two-run single to right center.
TOP 6
th | The Sharks quickly pulled back within a run after a Smith double into center scored Langwell. The very next at-bat, Lageyre crossed home on a Williams fielder's choice, as NSU found itself tied once again at 5-5.
BOT 7
th | After having a runner thrown out at third to end the top half of the inning, the Saints put an end to the contest on a dramatic, two-out, three-run homer.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Sharks pounded out a season-high 14 hits in the effort.
- Five players recorded multiple hits, including Williams, who finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Fine has now hit safely in each of the Sharks' first six games of the season.
