HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 3
rd | NSU starting pitcher
Emily Hess escaped a pair of jams in the opening two innings, yet couldn't quite work her magic again in the third after Tampa put the first three batters aboard following a hit-by-pitch and two errors. The second of the two errors handed the Spartans a 1-0 lead before a fielder's choice later in the inning made it a 2-0 ball game.
TOP 6
th | Searching for some life after being held to just two hits through five innings, NSU received a shot in the arm after
Samantha Burke led off the frame with a walk. An
Alexis Smith single through the left side put two on still with nobody out. In the ensuing at-bat,
Sydney Lageyre grounded a ball to third, yet a Tampa miscue allowed both pinch runner
Hayley Lynch and Smith to score, knotting the ball game at 2-2.
BOT 7
th | Freshman
Ashley Connor replaced Hess in the circle in the seventh, tossing a scoreless inning to send the game into extras.
TOP 8
th | Feeding off the momentum, Lageyre opened the inning with a bunt single for the Sharks. A sacrifice bunt by
Ryleigh Langwell, followed by a wild pitch, soon moved Lageyre over to third with one away. A groundout to second kept Lageyre stuck on third. However, with two outs, Janowiak got the job done, lacing a single back up the middle for the eventual game-winner.
