Connor’s One-Hit Shutout Propels Sharks to Series-Opening Victory

Freshman Ashley Connor strikes out season-high eight in 3-0 win over Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Ashley Connor has already racked up quite a few notable outings this season, but Friday's performance may very well take the cake as the Nova Southeastern freshman starting pitcher tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout to guide the Sharks to a 3-0 victory in the Sunshine State Conference series opener at Eckerd. Connor struck out a season-high eight batters in the effort, improving her mark to an impressive 12-2 overall in the circle.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 2nd | Connor didn't need much support, yet the NSU offense supplied some with the game-opening run in the top of the second after Madison Fine lifted a sacrifice fly into left to score Tia Williams from third base.

TOP 3rd  | Sydney Lageyre sparked a two-out rally in the third with a single down the left-field line. The NSU centerfielder moved into scoring position with a stolen base before Ryleigh Langwell's double to left center made it a 2-0 ball game. After trading places with Lageyre, Langwell came around to score just three pitches later on a Williams single into right center.

BOT 3rd | Connor faced her only real threat of the night after the Tritons put two aboard with one out in the home half of the third. However, the Jacksonville native would induce a fly out to left before striking out one of her eight batters to keep the shutout intact.

BOT 7th | Retiring the final seven batters she'd face in order, Connor worked a perfect seventh inning to cap the complete-game, one-hitter.

INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Connor allowed baserunners in just two of her seven innings, lowering her season ERA to 1.57.
  • Making only her second start of the season, Sidney Swantic finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Together, Swantic and Williams accounted for four of the Sharks' seven hits.
  • Willams (2), Lageyre (1) and Alexis Smith (1) combined for four stolen bases for NSU.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • NSU and Rollins remain tied atop the SSC standings at 12-4.
