Sharks Take Down Sailfish in SSC Contest

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's basketball team won its 19th game of the season on Wednesday evening, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 72-66. The Sharks were led by 14 points from A'lexus Bryant and 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals from Kyannah Grant in the Sunshine State Conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter – PBA jumped out to a 4-7 lead before a three-ball from Kyannah Grant tied the game. The Sailfish went on a 5-0 run but back-to-back layups from Sarei McGill and A'Lexus Bryant brought the Sharks to an 11-12 deficit. A layup and free throw from India Shepherd gave Nova Southeastern a 14-12 lead, its first of the game. NSU picked up three points from a free throw by Kyannah Grant, an offensive rebound by Frederick and a layup by Mackenzie Steele to give the Sharks a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter – Shepherd got the scoring in the second quarter started with a floater from the left side. The Sailfish gained momentum and took a 19-20 lead on the Sharks with just under 8 minutes remaining in the half. Frederick regained the lead for NSU on a pair of free throws after drawing a foul in the paint. Just after going down, the Sharks took a 29-26 lead with help from a Kyannah Grant three-point-play and a three-pointer from Skyla Osceola. In the last two minutes, PBA went on a 7-2 run that put NSU into halftime with a 31-33 deficit.

Third Quarter – Frederick opened the second half with a pair of free throws to tie the game 34-34. NSU jumped out to a 41-35 lead, led by four consecutive points from Conley. Kyarrah Grant capped off a 10-3 Sharks' run with a corner three-pointer to put NSU up 44-38. In a highlight play, Frederick finished off a crossover with a reverse layup. As PBA battled back, Kyannah Grant scored back-to-back baskets that put NSU up 55-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter – Nova Southeastern's lead was extended to 57-51 after a pair of free throws from Frederick. Out of a timeout, a perfect inbound pass from Frederick set Kyarrah Grant up with a layup that put NSU up 59-55. Just as PBA inched back and made the score 61-60, Conley made a fastbreak layup on a cross-court pass from Frederick. With just over four minutes remaining, the Sailfish tied the game 63-63. Just as the game got close, Bryant took over the fourth quarter, scoring six consecutive points to put NSU up 69-64 with under 30 seconds remaining. A strong fourth quarter helped the Sharks close out a 72-66 win over the Sailfish.


STATS OF THE NIGHT
- Five players reached double figures in the scoring department for NSU, with Bryant (14), Kyannah Grant (13), Kyarrah Grant (12), Frederick (10) and Conley (10) reaching at least 10 points.
- The Sharks outscored the Sailfish in the paint 38-28.
