FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The #10 Nova Southeastern Sharks are set for the SSC Championship Game, as they'll square off against the Florida Tech Panthers at 4pm. Today's Championship will be a rematch from last year's title game, during which the Sharks fell in penalty kicks, so the Sharks will be looking to exact revenge.
The Sharks tied the Panthers 1-1 in their lone matchup earlier this season back on September 20th. Neither team was able to score in the first half, but Florida Tech got on the board first with Lauryn Wood's score at the 65:59 mark of the second half. NSU's
Haley Mettrick tied the score with a goal five minutes later off an assist from
Maria Jansen, and neither team was able to score after that.
Jansen, who was recently inserted into the starting lineup, has been an impact player for the Sharks. Jansen scored in the 3-1 quarterfinal win over Barry and also scored the lone goal in the semifinals against Florida Southern, both off assists from Ella Niemela.
Alexa Bereczki scored the other two goals and also had an assist in the quarterfinals.
The Sharks offense has been led by
Sofia Suarez, the recently minted SSC Offensive Player of the Year (12 goals, five assists, 29 points), and
Genesis Hernandez (12 goals, six assists, 30 points).
Kajsa Lang, the SSC Defensive Player of the Year, has helped anchor the Sharks stingy defense. The aforementioned Bereczki and
Oliwia Loeman (six goals, two assists, 14 points), who was recently named SSC Co-Freshman of the Year, have also been crucial players for the Sharks.
The Sharks and Panthers will kickoff the SSC Championship at 4pm. To stay up-to-date on Sharks Soccer, follow on Instagram and Twitter/X at NSU_WSoccer.
