#11 Sharks Beat Barry, Move to 2-0 in SSC Play

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Kaliyah Morales and Bridie McCann both scored 16 points, and Morales added seven assists and four steals to lead #11 Nova Southeastern to an 86-77 victory over Barry on Rivalry Night. Morales and McCann were flanked in double-figures by Taydra Simpson (15 points), Markayla Holland (13 points) and Celeste Reed (13 points) as they grinded out their eighth consecutive victory.

How it Happened

Both teams battled to a 3-3 tie out of the gates, before the Sharks jumped ahead on a Bridie McCann three-pointer. Barry responded with an and-one and a three-pointer of their own, and the Bucs led 10-9 at the first media timeout. NSU jumped ahead on a baseline layup from Holland, then got another three from McCann and a midrange jumper from Morales. The Sharks forced consecutive turnovers and went up double digits after free throws from Reed and another pullup jumper from Morales. The Bucs responded with a three pointer of their own and four free throws, as the Sharks' aggressiveness got them into the bonus. The Sharks got a late and-one from Katelynn Hagy, and another layup from Reed, but the Bucs hit a last sound layup to cut NSU's lead to 26-20 after the first quarter.

The Bucs opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run, hitting consecutive three-pointers. NSU responded with consecutive steals, and a layup by Morales, and they led 37-31 at the media timeout. NSU stretched its lead to double digits on a layup from Hailey Chiles, but the scoring was balanced throughout the quarter. The Sharks led 43-37 at the half.

Barry opened the second half with an 8-2 run and tied the game at 45 on a three from Jameria Robinson, and they tied the game again at 53 on two free throws as the Sharks reached the bonus. The Buccaneers maintained a four-point lead for the majority of the period. The Sharks tied the ballgame at 61 on a layup from Horton and assist from Morales, but the Bucs went ahead after two more free throws and led 63-61 after the third.

The Sharks took the lead back as Simpson went on a personal 5-0 run with a three-pointer, steal and score. NSU went ahead by six after a layup from McCann, and they led 75-69 at the final media timeout. The Sharks went up by double digits, 79-69, at the 3:30 mark on a decelerated-step layup from Morales. The Bucs did cut the deficit to seven and fouled late to extend the game, but the Sharks knocked down their free throws and close out the the 86-77 victory.
