Sharks take SSC series over Panthers

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team took the Sunshine State Conference series, but split the doubleheader, against the Florida Tech Panthers on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex. The Sharks dropped the first game 8-2 on Saturday, before taking the rubber-match 6-4 in the series finale.

How it Happened
  • The Panthers got on the scoreboard first with a sacrifice fly, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of third inning
  • Xavier Moronta tied the game with a sacrifice fly of his own in the bottom half of the inning. 
  • Florida Tech plated seven runs across the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, tallying a pair of home runs and took an 8-1 lead over NSU. 
  • Roylan Quevedo plated Zeth Rodriguez with an RBI double, putting the score at 8-2.
How it Happened
  • Anthony Karoly struck out five across two innings of work to open the series finale. 
  • Florida Tech plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, taking a 2-0 lead. 
  • The Sharks answered with a four-run frame in the bottom of the third inning; Xavier Moronta drove in Ty Torti with an RBI single, Boris Pena added a sacrifice fly, before Anthony Stinson and Zeth Rodriguez added RBI hits to give the Sharks a 4-2 lead. 
  • Florida Tech rallied to tie the game with runs in the fourth and sixth innings. 
  • Gabriel Esquivel reclaimed the lead for NSU with an RBI single, putting the Sharks ahead 5-4. 
  • Pena extended the lead with a sacrifice fly, giving Nova Southeastern a 6-4 advantage.
  • Federico Zapata and Tyler Venegas combined to throw 3.2 innings of shutout baseball, as Venegas earned his first career save, and the Sharks sealed the SSC series victory with a 6-4 win over Florida Tech in the finale.
