FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After winning the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Tournament, NSU's men's and women's basketball teams are gearing up for the NCAA Division II South Region competition. Having notched its fifth straight SSC title in dramatic fashion, the No. 1-ranked NSU men's basketball team will host eighth-seeded Morehouse College on Saturday, March 14, at Rick Case Arena. The fifth seeded women, who defeated Florida Southern College for their SSC crown, will take on No. 4 seed Miles College in Huntsville, Ala., on Friday, March 13.
"Our men's and women's basketball teams have had outstanding seasons," said NSU President and CEO Harry K. Moon. "The NSU community and I are proud of their accomplishments and are excited to cheer them on in the postseason."
On the men's side, the rest of the pairings in the field include 2-seed Palm Beach Atlantic against 7-seeded Alabama-Huntsville; 3-seed West Alabama versus 6-seed West Florida and 4-seed Florida Southern versus 5-seed Montevallo. The men are coming off a dramatic, come-from-behind overtime thriller over Palm Beach Atlantic in the SSC Championship game.
Ross Reeves drilled a shot from just inside halfcourt to send the game into overtime, and the Sharks finished the Sailfish off 92-85 in the extra period. For his efforts, Reeves was named tournament MVP.
The rest of the women's bracket features teams from the SSC, the Gulf South Conference, and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tournament host #1-seeded Alabama-Huntsville will face #8-seeded Edward Waters University from Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday, March 14. The winner will take on the winner of the NSU-Miles game.
Meanwhile, #2-seed Union University (Tenn.) will take on #7-seed Florida Southern, and #3-seed Eckerd College play #6-seed Embry-Riddle. The winner of the NCAA South Region Tournament will advance to the NCAA Elite Eight in Pittsburgh, Pa. You can see the full NCAA Tournament Bracket
