NSU ATHLETIC MISSION STATEMENT

Nova Southeastern University recognizes, values, and supports intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational mission of the university. Central to the program's mandate and in accord with the stated goals of the university, the department of intercollegiate athletics commits itself to fostering leadership, lifelong learning, and service to the community among its student-athletes.

The department is dedicated to sponsoring a competitive program of intercollegiate athletics for men and women. Valuing deeply the physical, social, and emotional welfare of those who participate, the department and the university express this commitment through membership in the NCAA and the Sunshine State Conference, both of which exemplify the principles of amateur athletics. These latter include diversity, sportsmanship, fair play, and equitable opportunity for all.

The intercollegiate athletics program at Nova Southeastern University is committed to the recruitment, preparation, and welfare of highly qualified and gifted men and women.

NSU ACADEMIC SERVICES IS COMMITTED TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

1. To ensure that Nova Southeastern University is recognized as a leader among the nation's NCAA Division II athletic programs.
2. To maintain the highest standard of excellence in the continued growth of the Department of Athletics within the NCAA and the Sunshine State Conference.
3. To enhance the educational experience and citizenship of our student-athletes in a highly competitive environment and to promote academic and athletic excellence, sportsmanship, community spirit, entertainment and alumni interest through our programs.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
As a student-athlete, you will be required to work closely with the Athletic Coordinator of Academic Services to assure that you are meeting the standards set forth by the University, the NSU Athletic Department, and the NCAA. All athletes must maintain “good” academic standing, the appropriate number of earned credit hours, and continue working toward the completion of their degree.

The following are eligibility requirements all student-athletes must fulfill in order to receive athletic financial aid and to compete in any NSU Intercollegiate Sport. Please be aware that the minimum GPA standards set forth by the NSU Athletic Department mirror those of the NCAA. However, there are also policies set forth by the University, and they are detailed following the Athletic Academic Policy.

Minimum Requirements (GPA)
All student-athletes must maintain the following minimum GPA standards per NCAA rules to be eligible to compete. However, we strongly encourage a minimum GPA of 2.0 and average 15 credit hours per semester. Per NCAA guidelines, student-athletes must complete an average of 12-semester hours for each of the previous terms enrolled. Student-athletes eligibility will be monitored throughout the semester and evaluated at the end of each semester. For a student-athlete
“at risk”, his/her eligibility status will be determined by the Director of Athletics, Head
Coach, and Coordinator of Academic Services

NSU Athletic Department Recommended Academic Progress Scale
Year                             Credits                                                     GPA
First Year                     26-30 Credits Earned                          1.80
Second Year               60 Credits Earned                                1.90
Third Year                    86-90 Credits Earned                          2.00
Fourth Year                 120 Credits Earned to graduate         2.00

NCAA 75-25 Rule
All student-athletes must adhere to the NCAA 75%-25% rule. Per semester, a student-athlete may apply no more than 25% of the minimum required credit hours for the academic year from summer sessions, toward maintaining eligibility. Therefore, a minimum of 18 degree hours must be earned during the regular academic year in order for summer school hours to be counted towards maintaining eligibility.

6-Hour Requirement
Student-athletes must earn six-semester hours of academic credit the preceding regular academic term in which the student-athlete has been enrolled full time. If the student-athlete repeats a course in which a satisfactory grade was initially received, the repeated course may not be used to satisfy the six-hour rule.

Transfer Student
Any student-athlete admitted as a transfer student must meet with the Coordinator of Academic Services at time of admittance to discuss the academic progress scale that pertains specifically to them. A transfer student is an individual who transfers from a collegiate institution after having met any one of the following conditions at that institution:

(a) The student attended a class(es) in any quarter or semester in which the student was enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies, even if the enrollment was on a provisional basis & the student was later determined by the institution not to be admissible;
(b) The student is/was enrolled in an institution in a minimum full-time program in a night school that is considered to have regular semesters or quarters the same as the institution’s day school & the student is/was a regularly matriculated student;
(c) The student attended a branch school that does not conduct an intercollegiate athletics
program, but the student had been enrolled in another collegiate institution before attendance at the branch school;
(d) The student attended a branch school that conducted an intercollegiate athletics program and transfers to an institution other than the parent institution;

Designating a Program of Study
According to NCAA regulations, all student-athletes are required to designate a program of study leading toward a specific baccalaureate degree by the beginning of the third year of enrollment (fifth semester). Once a major is declared, the credits used to meet progress-toward-degree requirements must be credits toward the student-athlete’s designated degree program.

NSU INSTITUTION ACADEMIC POLICY (Undergraduate)
Minimum Requirements (GPA)
All students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 to be considered in “good academic standing”. In some degree programs, students must maintain a higher cumulative grade point average or a higher cumulative grade point average in ‘major’ courses. See specific program information for details.

Review of Academic Progress
The Office of the Dean reviews student academic progress at the end of each semester. A
student whose grade point average (GPA) falls below minimum GPA requirements will receive notification that they have been placed in one of the categories of academic progress listed below. All of these categories will become permanently recorded on official student transcripts.

Academic Warning: Student whose semester GPA falls below 2.0, regardless of cumulative GPA
Academic Probation: Students who have been previously placed on academic warning, have attempted at least 12 cumulative credits (including courses from which the student has withdrawn), and have a cumulative GPA below 2.0.
Continued Academic Probation: Students who have been previously placed on Academic Probation, retain a cumulative GPA below 2.0 but have earned a semester GPA above 2.0.  (Students who successfully petition and return following suspension will also be placed on ‘continued academic probation.’)

Off Academic Probation: Students who achieve a minimum cumulative GPA above 2.0 when previously on academic probation.

Academic Suspension: Students on academic probation or continued academic probation who fail to earn a minimally acceptable GPA in the next semester of enrollment. Length of academic suspension is two semesters. Students must petition for readmission at least one month before the requested date of re-admittance (see Notification and Appeals). Students who are approved to reenroll after serving academic suspension are readmitted under continuing academic probation. While serving on academic suspension, students may not make progress in their NSU degree programs. Credits earned at other institutions during suspension will not be transferred to NSU.

Academic Dismissal: Students who were previously on academic suspension and readmitted will be academically dismissed if they fail to meet a minimally acceptable semester GPA of 2.0. Students in this category may not reapply for admission.

Notification and Appeals
A student placed on academic suspension or academically dismissed will be sent a letter to his/her permanent mailing address. The student will have until the deadline specified in the academic dismissal or suspension letter to appeal to the Academic Progress Committee. The committee includes faculty members from each academic division and a representative from the Office of Academic Services. The committee reviews appeals for suspension and dismissal. Notification of decisions will be sent to the permanent mailing address of the student. For more information, the student may contact an academic advisor or the Office of the Dean.

PROCESS FOR REGISTERING FOR CLASSES
Per NCAA rules, student-athletes no longer shall be considered enrolled in a full-time program of studies (after dropping a course that places the student below full-time status) when the dropped course becomes official in accordance with procedures determined by the institution for all students.

All students-athletes who want to make schedule changes or add/drop classes must first obtain approval from the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services. Schedule changes cannot be made without prior approval from the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. This is monitored in the Department, as well as in the university computer system, in order to protect you NCAA eligibility and compliance of the University.

In order to make any of the above changes, student-athletes must complete the following steps:
1. Obtain a Course Drop/Add/Withdrawal Form from the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services or your campus Advisor.
2. Signature of the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services is required on the form for approval.
3. Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor. Complete a Student Transaction Form (STF) listing the classes you would like to add/drop/ or withdraw.
4. Bring the completed STF to, or have the Advisor email, the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services for signed approval.
5. Return the signed STF in you Academic Advisor’s mailbox.

** All forms will be available in the Coordinator of Athletic Academic’s office **

CLASS ATTENDANCE
Student-Athletes are expected to attend class on a regular and punctual basis. It is a matter of professor’s discretion to accept excuses for absence and to grant permission for make-up work. Course instructors establish specific attendance policies that must be adhered to by student-athletes.

Arrangements for taking any examination or completing homework assignments affected by team travel are the student-athlete’s responsibility. Instructors are aware of the problems involved in scheduling athletic competitions, and are usually willing to provide some flexibility if the student-athlete requests consideration in advance. Additionally, your class attendance will be regularly monitored by the Athletics Staff (Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services and/or the Coaching Staff). Unexcused and excessive absences will result in loss of game participation and possibly Athletic Financial Aid reduction. Professors will also notify the Athletics staff of missed classes and concerns for academic performance.

ABSENCE REPORT
The Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services sends Excused Absence Letters to all professors notifying them of a student-athlete’s absence due to participation in an athletic event. Coaches are expected to provide travel rosters to the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services at least 72 hours prior to the competition travel date. These notifications, in no way, should replace the responsibility of the student-athlete to notify their professors themselves of their absence due to athletic participation. Student-athletes are still required to make arrangements for any class work that may be missed due to their class absence.

PROGRESS REPORTS
In an attempt to maintain and improve the standard of academic excellence for NSU student-athletes, Academic Progress Reports will be emailed to professors of all student-athletes, regardless of academic standing. Academic Progress Reports will be emailed to professors by the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services every four weeks within the semester. Coaches will be updated with all academic progress reports from their teams.

STUDY HALL
All NSU student-athletes (incoming freshman, college transfers, and current NSU student-athletes) are subject to mandatory study hall. Students are placed in study hall based on specific academic criteria. The student-athlete in his/her first semester at NSU (freshman or transfer) as well as any student-athlete with a GPA below 2.5, either cumulative or from the previous semester, will be given a full review to determine is study hall is warranted. The Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services and the Manager of Student-Athlete Academic Services will review each athlete’s academic situation and determine study hall status/times of each student-athlete. Study times and dates will be determined and organized with the student and the Athletic Academic staff member responsible for him/her. These hours will be a regular part of the student’s weekly schedule, and will be monitored, the same as a class, for attendance. This study time is to be attended in addition to any team study time required by the student-athlete. There are consequences in place for missed hours, and excessive missed study hours will lead to possible suspension from athletic competition.

Consequences for missed Study Hall sessions will be determined by the respective S-A
Academic Services staff member and/or the Head Coach.

Study Hall Rules:
1. Come to study hall prepared to study. Bring required books, notebooks, etc.
2. Do not disturb other student-athletes who are trying to study.
3. Laptop computers are allowed, but only for academic purposes. No social networking, instant messaging, personal emailing, etc. allowed.
4. All music must be self contained and cannot be disturbing to others.

6. No tobacco of any kind is allowed.
7. No cell phone use!

10. Any student who is not studying will be asked to leave AND he/she will receive NO
hours for the time spent in study hall that day.
11. No Food or Drinks

Study Hall Hours: M-F 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

LAPTOP POLICY
To assist you with your academic requirements while traveling, NSU Department of
Intercollegiate Athletics has laptops for you to check out. These computers are meant to be used in completing necessary course work. To gain access to a departmental laptop, see the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services. Check-out one of the laptops is limited to 24 hours or a weekend trip. Exceptions of this policy may be considered if no other student needs a laptop. A laptop must be signed by each student-athlete checking out a laptop. You are responsible for the condition of the laptop upon return. If you encounter any problems while using the equipment, please notify at the time of return.

BOOK AWARD SCHOLARSHIP POLICY
If a student-athlete receives a Book Award Scholarship, it can only be taken away per a coach’s request OR if the student-athlete does not maintain a 2.0 GPA. If you earned the Athletic Book Award Scholarship, you must take the following steps in order to retrieve your books:
1. Pick up your textbooks from the NSU Bookstore by showing your NSU ID to the cashier.
2. At the end of each semester, all textbooks must be returned to the NSU Bookstore by the last day of finals week.
** Any questions should be referred to the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services (CAAS).

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC AWARDS
1. Athletic Director’s Award Incentive. All student-athletes receiving a GPA 3.75 (or above) will receive a book scholarship for the following semester. At the end of each fall/winter semester, the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services will determine which student-athletes qualify for the Athletic Book Award for the following semester and notify the NSU Bookstore. Prior to the start of the semester, the CAAS will notify these student-athletes of their achievement, and the Director of Athletics will send out a personal congratulatory letter to each.

2. Male and Female Scholar Athlete. Each year at the Athletics Award Banquet, the AD, FAR, and SWA select a male and female scholar athlete. The criteria are: graduating senior, cumulative GPA above 3.25, involved within the campus community. This is the most prestigious academic award that a student-athlete can receive from the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
