SUMMER 2016
Ortiz made five starts in his return to the Stingers, posting a 3.12 ERA, with 25 strikeouts to just eight walks in 34.2 innings. He went the distance on July 5th to earn the win, striking out four in his nine-inning complete game, and recorded a season-high seven strikeouts in six innings in his last game on July 12th. On June 20th, he allowed a season-low one run on four hits, with six strikeouts in seven innings, the first of three consecutive quality starts, in a 2-1 victory.
AS A JUNIOR (2016)
Made 13 starts out of 14 appearances for the NCAA Division II National Champion Sharks… Earned his “Big Game Jonny” moniker for his clutch pitching to earn the victories in the series-clinching games of both the NCAA South Regional Tournament and NCAA National Tournament… In a 3-1 win over Delta State on May 23 to send the team to Cary, N.C., allowed just one run on five hits in 5.1 innings without issuing a walk… Bounced back from a rough three-run, five-hit first inning, of which three hits were infield singles, in the National Championship game against Millersville to allow only one run on two hits over the next four innings, while the offense raced into the lead and would soon win, 8-6… Exhibited excellent control, not allowing a walk in five of his 13 starts, and issuing only one walk in another five… Struck out a season-high six in five shutout innings against Tuskegee in a 9-0 win on Feb. 20, and following that up with a season-high 7.2 innings at Flagler on Feb. 27… Ended the season at 7-3 in 68.2 innings, with a 4.72 ERA, 80 hits allowed, 17 walks allowed and 42 strikeouts.

Compiled a 2-1 record and 3.54 ERA in nine appearances, six of them starts, for the Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League in Willmar, Minn., coached by Matt Hollod… Delivered his best performance in his first game, tossing six shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out three… Earned his first victory in his next appearance, with a season-highs of seven innings of work and five strikeouts… Displayed elite control, issuing walks to just 3.4% of the 177 batters he faced… Played travel ball for the Mizuno Edge, on the same staff as current Sharks pitcher Alex Kline.
PREVIOUS SCHOOL
Attended the Daytona State College Falcons in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he played for Head Coach Tim Touma and alongside fellow transfer Charles Vanderventer, also a member of the 2015 recruiting class… An FCSAA All-Mid-Florida Conference Honorable Mention in 2014 and named the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week two weeks in a row during the 2015 season… Made 22 starts and had a 3.40 ERA in 119 career innings pitched… Threw two complete games and a shutout as a sophomore, compiling 52 strikeouts against 14 walks in 64 innings, along with a 1.13 WHIP and .239 opponent average… Walked just 5.4% of the 515 batters he faced in his two seasons.

Played for Frank Bumbales as a member of the Coral Springs HS Colts… Voted Second Team pitcher by the Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald as a senior, after putting up a 1.54 ERA in 23 innings with 27 strikeouts and a 4-1 record.
