Luis Gurrieres joined the NSU men’s basketball coaching staff in August 2008 as an assistant coach. Gurrieres is a 2006 graduate of NSU. He played one season under former NSU coach Tony McAndrews before starting at both guard and forward in 2004-05 and 2005-06 in Gary Tuell’s first two years as the Sharks’ head coach. Gurrieres was NSU’s team MVP in ‘05-06, helping the Sharks to 17 wins and a second place finish in the Sunshine State Conference, averaging 8.2 points per game while handing out a team-best 125 assists. His 16 rebounds in a win at Florida Tech that season fell one shy of tying the school’s single-game record.

“Lou is a wonderful addition to our staff and a perfect fit for our program,” said Tuell. “He is extremely popular and well-known in the south Florida basketball community and will do an excellent job to help us shore up our local recruiting. He is also a great fit for our team because of his knowledge of present players. He relates well to our guys and has their respect as both a person and a teacher of the game. Lou is bright, industrious and loves the game. His presence will be felt by the positive energy he can bring both to our team and to our campus, where he is a familiar and popular face.”

Before coming to NSU, Gurrieres was a two-year starter for legendary coach Butch Staiano at Miami Columbus High School.

Following graduation with abachelor’s degree from NSU, Gurrieres had a brief stint in professional basketball before working in the financial field in both Dallas and Miami. He is currently pursuing his master’s in international business.
