Former professional swimmer and Great Lakes Valley Conference standout Monica Alvarez joins the Nova Southeastern swimming coaching staff in 2021.

Prior to NSU, Alvarez worked as an assistant coach at the University of Indianapolis for the 2019-20 season. 

Alvarez was a two-time Olympic trials qualifier and three-time World Swimming Championships participant for her native Colombia. Still her country's national record holder in the 100-meter breaststroke, she ended her athletics career in 2016 and began coaching youth and senior groups in Pembroke Pines, Fla.

As a student-athlete, Alvarez spent two seasons at Drury University where she was a nine-time All-American. She led Drury to a team national championship in 2011 and a runner-up finish in 2012. She twice helped the Panthers to second-place showings in both the 200 and 400 medley relays while touching third in the 100 breaststroke, all in 2011.
