ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Nova Southeastern tennis team concluded day two of the Naval Academy’s Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational with strong play in both singles and doubles play.
Two NSU teams finished doubles play Saturday, earning their spots on the second day due to multiple wins on Friday.
Kamryn Blackwood (Jr., Farmington, N.M.) and
Bianca Roberts (So., Fort Walden Beach, Fla.) were defeated in a tough match against Navy’s Antill/Winter, 9-7. In the A-flight,
Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) and
Austin Lavallii (Sr., Willimaston, Mich.) ended their doubles run against the Seton Hall team of Sher/Portela-Berrios, falling by a score of 8-3.
With the conclusion of doubles play came the beginning of singles action. In the A-flight, All-American
Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) lost her first match but went on to dominate the consolation draw. Johansson won three matches in the back draw against opponents from Towson, St. Bonaventure and Loyola. Johansson won the back draw against Loyola’s Hahn in a close pro set, 9-8 (5).
Rizzolo had a solid run in the A-flight, going 2-1 with wins over Monmouth and Navy. In the semifinal, Rizzolo faced Seton Hall’s Sher and player her close in the first set. In the end, she would fall by a score of 7-6, 6-2.
In the B-flight,
Luisa Pintado (Guadalajara, Mexico) was sent to the consolation bracket after a tough 9-7 loss to Cordero-Martinez of Seton Hall. In the back draw, Pintado breezed past Towson’s Dow, 8-3, before once again falling to a Seton Hall player in Landert. The freshman was the victim of retribution, as Landert was put in the back draw by a fellow Shark. Lavallii defeated the Seton Hall student-athlete by a score of 8-4.
The Sharks’ second consolation draw victory came from freshman
Iryna Serdyuk (Boca Raton, Fla.), who went 4-0 in the back draw. She started play off with two shutouts against Monmouth and Manhattan. After defeating St. Bonaventure’s Cole, 8-4, Serdyuk claimed the entire draw with a win over St. Bonaventure’s Burke, 8-2.
Linda Kornienko (Fort Myers, Fla.) recorded a win over Navy’s Thorsell, 8-3, in the C-flight.
Emily Hart (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) was the lone Shark in the D-flight. Hart began the day with a dominant win over D’Arcy of Monmouth, 8-1, before being eliminated.
The Moore Invitational will conclude play on Sunday in Annapolis, Md.
