WINTER PARK, Fla. (Jan. 13, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern University men's basketball team was edged 86-83 in overtime at No. 23 Rollins in Sunshine State Conference basketball action on Wednesday evening. Tars reigning SSC Player of the Year Nick Wolf capped a 29 point performance with a game-winning three pointer with two seconds remaining. The loss drops the Sharks to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in SSC play while Rollins improves to 11-3 and 3-1 in SSC play.
"The road is not our friend," said NSU head coach Gary Tuell. "We are so close to being a really good basketball team. But until we can win on the road we won't reach our full potential. It's not just the young kids, it's everybody. I'm really proud of the way the guys came back. I was telling them the whole game we were going to win. I believe strongly they're good enough to do that every night."
The Sharks held the early edge, leading the Tars by five points just four minutes into the game. Wolf led Rollins back out front, scoring 15 points as the Tars led 37-32 at the half. Junior forward Alex Gynes (Nowra, Australia) made his presence felt early on with eight points on 3-3 shooting but was limited to just seven minutes due to foul trouble. Sophomore center Rob Huntington (Perth, Australia) led the Sharks with nine points off the bench in his second game since returning from injury.
Rollins took a commanding 16 point lead at 62-46 with 9:40 left to play in the second half. Freshman guard Brian Cahill (Arlington, Va.) and Huntington took over from there, leading the Sharks back into the game by scoring 15 of the final 19 points of regulation for NSU. After Rollins took a one point lead with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, Sharks junior guard Lemar Dyer (Miami, Fla.) was fouled driving to the basket with 1.5 seconds left to play. After missing on the first shot, Dyer converted on the second shot to force the game into overtime.
The Sharks were forced to mount another comeback in the extra period, falling behind 83-77 with 53 seconds to go. Three pointers on consecutive possessions by Huntington and junior guard Max Papendieck (Adelaide, Australia) knotted the score at 83-83 and gave Rollins possession of the basketball with 19 seconds to go. With the clock winding down Rollins looked to Wolf, who stepped up and drained a three pointer with two seconds on the clock. A last second desperation shot by the Sharks fell short and the Tars came away with the 86-83 victory.
Huntington led all NSU scorers with 20 points on 8-11 shooting and pulled down five rebounds. Cahill followed with 19 points, including five three-pointers. Gynes was also in double figures with 12 points.
"Lemar made a great free throw under a lot of pressure to give us a chance to win. Cahill and Hunting ton were terrific all night long," said Tuell.
Wolf paced Rollins with a 29 point effort. He hit 11-15 shots, including 6-9 on three pointers.
"Rollins has a nice club and the player of the year in the league," Tuell concluded. "We made a freshman mistake on the last possession which allowed him to get an open shot. Take your hat off to Nick, he's a class guy and a great player. All these games we've lost on the road are hard to swallow because I feel we've had the opportunity to win every one. But the good thing is they all come back to our place. We're looking forward to that. "
The Sharks travel to Miami Shores, Fla. to play the Barry Buccaneers in a SSC game at 4 pm on Saturday, January 16th.
