Men’s and Women’s Swimming Tops Florida Southern

Sharks pick up their first dual meet wins this season

. – Both the Nova Southeastern University men’s and women’s swimming teams came out triumphant in their first official home meet of the 2010-11 inaugural season on Saturday. The Shark women (1-1, 1-0 SSC) defeated Florida Southern 116-85, while the men (1-1, 1-0 SSC) defeated the Moccasins 129-64 on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Aquatic Complex in Sunshine State Conference action.

Out of the 22 events, the Sharks won eight out of 11 women’s races and eight out of 11 men’s races.

"As a team, we did a great job stepping up to the tough competitors from Florida Southern. Individually, I'm very proud of how we responded in each race, top to bottom in each event,” head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron said. “We had some athletes record their in-season personal best times and I look forward to building off this momentum."

The Shark women kicked off the meet in solid fashion winning the 400-yard medley relay. The Ashley Aranda (Jr., Kenner, La.), Ewa Jamborska (Katowice, Poland), Marissa Leonard (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicole Gaynor (So., Orlando, Fla.) quartet recorded a season best time of 4:04.94 for the win. Devan Martin (So., Duluth, Ga.), Courtney Wilson (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.), Nichole Shultz (Fr., Roseville, Calif.) and Ashley Bransford (Fr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) followed with a time of 4:19.08 to finish second ahead of both of Florida Southern’s relay teams.

In the men’s 400-yard medley relay, NSU’s “A” relay team of Josh Davis (Fr., Huron, S.D.), Armin Hornikel (Jr., Goose Creek, S.C.), Jorge Ospina (Jr., Lazumillos, Venezuela), and Ash Dougan (Jr., Tewksbury, England) took home first place with a season-best time of 3:31.22, ahead of Florida Southern’s “A” relay team. NSU’s “C” relay, Tyler Wilson (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.); Jonathan Key (Fr., Biltmore Lake, N.C.); Chris Norris (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.); Eddie Bandi (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) finished behind Florida Southern in third with a time of 3:38.61. The Sharks also raced an exhibition relay with the “B” squad of Illya Prikhodko (Fr., Orlando, Fla.), Cameron Pfahler (So., Neptune Beach, Fla.), Darren Rubenchik (Fr., Ontario, Canada), and Nathan Caldwell (Fr., Naples, Fla.) finishing at 3:54.31.

In the women’s 1000-yard freestyle, Alexandra Zatylny (Fr., Quebec, Canada) finished just over one second off her personal best time at 11:03.47 to win the event. Kelley Yakymiw (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) finished second at 11:13.68, while Kristen Ghandour (Fr., South Neptune Beach, Fla.) finished fifth at 12:55.11. On the men’s side of the 1000-yard free, Jonas Grundstrom (Jr., Fagersta, Sweden) finished first with a season-best time of 9:48.03. Norris finished second with a time of 10:07.14 and Key finished fourth out of five at 10:18.95.

Aranda took home second place honors in the women’s 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.88, just fractions of a second behind Florida Southern’s Cara Potter who finished first at 2:00.15. Leonard followed in fourth place with at ime of 2:01.97. Ospina won on the men’s side with a time of 1:42.93, while Caldwell finished third at 1:47.82. Davis followed in fourth at 1:52.12, and Josh Anderson (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) raced as an exhibition to finish at 1:59.74.

Both the men’s and women’s 50-yard free saw personal best race times for the Sharks. Gaynor won the event for the women with a time of 0:24.86, while Dougan won the men’s event with a time of 0:21.74. The men’s and women’s 200-yard IM also displayed personal best times for Jamborska and Hornikel for NSU wins. Jamborska finished with a time of 2:13.23, while Hornikel finished at 1:58.34.

Schultz picked up a win for the Sharks in the women’s 200-yard fly finishing with a season-best time of 2:12.70. Ospina won the men’s 200-yard fly with a time of 1:53.90. Gaynor was the Sharks’ top finisher in the women’s 100-yard free completing the race in 0:54.85 for a season-best time. Dougan also finished with a season-best time at 0:47.38 on the men’s side also finishing second for NSU.

Aranda picked up another win finishing with a time of 2:12.40 in the women’s 200-yard back, while NSU’s Davis picked up his first individual win of the season in the men’s 200-yard back with a season-best time of 1:56.72. Leonard also picked up her first individual win of the season with a time of 5:28.73 in the women’s 500-yard free, while Grundstrom record his second win of the day in the men’s 500-yard free with a time of 4:48.85.

After the final 10-minute break of the day, Jamborska recorded her second individual win on the day with another season-best time, this time finishing the women’s 200-yard breast. Florida Southern picked up the first and second place in the men’s 200-yard breast, while Hornikel, Pfahler, Bandi and Nic Howell (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) all raced as exhibitions.

Florida Southern won the final two races of the day taking home first place in both the men’s and women’s 400-yard free relay. However, NSU’s women’s relay quad of Bransford, Shultz, Martin, and Zatylny finished close behind at 3:46.70. On the men’s side, Bunge, Prikhodko, Duran, and Shelley finished with the race best time at 3:18.60 as an exhibition, but FSC took home the win at 3:33.09.

Both Sharks’ men’s and women’s teams will return to action next weekend on Oct. 23 traveling to Tampa, Fla. to take on the Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference action. The meet is schedule to start at 11 am.
