Gainesville, Fla. -- The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swim teams showed continued improvement on the second day of the All-Florida Invitational on Saturday earning twice the points as the opening day. After two days of competition, the NSU women remain in seventh place with 92 points, while the men’s team holds onto third place with 316 points. Host Florida remains in the lead in both the men’s and women’s events.
“We did a great job focusing on the things we needed to do and got better which showed in the results this evening,” head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron said. “Our swimmers in the consolation heats made each race count by moving up in placement finishes and ultimately scoring more points for the team. The swimmers in the final heats had solid performances that helped put our team in a great position for tomorrow’s session.”
The Sharks opened the second day of competition with both the men’s and women’s 400-yard medley relay. Two NSU women’s relay teams made the finals with the “A” relay quartet of Ashley Arnanda (Jr., Kenner, La.), Ewa Jamborska (Jr., Katowice, Poland), Marissa Leonard (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicole Gaynor (So., Orlando, Fla.) finished 11th with a time of 4:10.50. The women’s “B” relay of Kelley Yakymiw (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.), Ashley Bransford (Fr., Santa Cruz, Aruba), Courtney Wilson (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) and Kristen Ghandour (Fr., South Neptune Beach, Fla.) finished 13th at 4:28.93.
On the men’s side, NSU’s “A” relay team of Josh Davis (Fr., Huron, S.D.), Armin Hornikel (Jr., Goose Creek, S.C.), Jorge Ospina (Jr., Lazumillos, Venezuela) and Ash Dougan (Jr., Tewksbury, England) flagged a time of 3:34.96 to finished 8th, while the “B” relay Tyler Wilson (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.), Cameron Pfahler (So., Neptune Beach, Fla.), Jonas Grundstrom (Jr., Fagersta, Sweden) and Jim Shelley (Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) combined for a time of 3:40.91 and finished ninth.
In the 200-yard medley relay, NSU’s “A” relay of Arnanda, Jamborska, Leonard and Gaynor combined for a time of 1:53.77 to finish 10th, while Yakymiw, Bransford, Wilson and Ghandour combined for a 2:02.98 time in the “B” relay to finish 12th. In the men’s 200-yard medley relay, NSU’s Davis, Hornikel, Ospina and Dougan posted a time of 1:37.98 in the “A” relay to finish sixth, while Darren Rubenchik (Fr., Ontario, Canada), Pfahler, John Michael Hayes (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Shelley combined for a ninth-place (1:42.04) in the “B” relay.
Jamborska was the Sharks’ lone competitor to move out of the women’s 400-yard IM prelims and finished 15th in the finals with a time of 4:46.61. Grundstrom, Hayes and Wilson each advanced to the finals of the men’s 400-yard IM and finished 10th-12th respectively. Grundstrom finished at 4:14.95, followed by Hayes (4:18.84) and Wilson (4:28.56).
Ospina, one of three Sharks to advance out of prelims, finished ninth overall and first in the B-final of the 100-yard men’s fly with a time of 52:24. Rubenchik (54.81) finished 13, while Dougan (56.16) finished 14th.
Continuing to flourish in the men’s 200-yard free, Ospina finished eighth overall with a time of 1:48.66 in the A-final. Teammates Nathan Caldwell (Fr., Naples, Fla.) finished 11th with a time of 1:48.44 and Dougan (1:50.30) finished 12th.
Both NSU’s Jamborska (1:09.73) and Bransford (1:10.09) advanced out of the prelims of the women’s 100-yard breast and finished 14th and 15th respectively. Hornikel was NSU’s top finisher in the men’s 100-yard breast with an eighth-place finish (1:00.02) overall. Pfahler (1:01.24) finished 10th and Jonathan Key (Fr., Biltmore Lake, N.C.) finished 13th (1:05.09).
In the women’s 100-yard back, NSU’s Aranda posted a time of 1:02.36 and finished 14th in the finals. On the men’s side, Davis was tops for NSU finishing 12th overall with a time of 0:54.44. Rubenchik (0:55.50) finished 13th and Wilson (58:08) turned in a 14th-place finish.
The final event of the day was the men’s and women’s 800-yard free relay. The Sharks’ women’s “A” relay, Gaynor, Bransford, Jamborksa and Aranda combined for a time of 8:18.59 to finish 12th overall, while “B” relay Yakymiw, Wilson, Ghandour, and Leonard (8:38.36) finished 14th. NSU’s men’s “A” and “B” relay tandems finished sixth and seventh respectively. Caldwell, Dougan, Davis and Ospina combined for a time of 7:15.09, while Grundstrom, Chris Norris (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.), William Bunge (Jr., Springfield, Mo.) and Pfahler finished at 7:18.79.
The Sharks will wrap up their inaugural start at the All Florida Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 3 with prelims at 9 am followed by the finals at 4 pm.
