FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The men’s and women’s swimming teams compete in its third SSC meet on Saturday, Nov. 6th at 1 p.m. in a dual swim meet at the NSU Aquatic Complex.
The men are a perfect 2-0 in conference action while the women are 1-1 in the SSC.
In its last meet, NSU dropped a dual meet to Division I opponent, Florida Atlantic. The Shark women lost 130-66, while the men dropped the meet 132.5-67.5.
The Sharks men’s “A” relay team of Josh Davis (Fr., Huron, S.D.), Armin Hornikel (Jr., Goose Creek, S.C.), Jorge Ospina (Jr., Lazumillos, Venezuela), and Ash Dougan (Jr., Tewksbury, England) finished a close third at 3:30.00, while Illya Prikhodko (Fr., Orlando, Fla.), Cameron Pfahler (So., Neptune Beach, Fla.), Darren Rubenchik (Fr., Ontario, Canada) and Nathan Caldwell (Fr., Naples, Fla.) teamed for a fourth place finish at 3:39.62.
In a close men’s freestyle sprint, Dougan (0:21.94) finished fourth, while Jim Shelley (Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) (0:22.77) and William Bunge (Jr., Springfield, Mo.) (0:23.05) finished sixth and seventh respectively.
NSU’s womens “A” relay quartet of Ashley Aranda (Jr., Kenner, La.), Ewa Jamborska (Jr., Katowice, Poland), Nichole Schultz (Roseville, Calif.) and Nicole Gaynor (So., Orlando, Fla.) finished a close third at 4:04.19 against the Owls of Florida Atlantic.
In the women’s 1000-yard freestyle, NSU took third, fifth and sixth. Alexandra Zatylny (Fr., Quebec, Canada) was the top Shark finishing at 11:05.40, while Kelley Yakymiw (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) and Kristen Ghandour (Fr., South Neptune Beach, Fla.) finished at 11:26.71 and 13:00.90 respectively.
The Rollins men’s swimming team comes into the meet 0-1 in SSC competition after falling to Saint Leo, 140-121. The women’s team ended its meet with the Lions in a 130-130 draw on Oct. 30 in Winter Park, Fla.
The men’s team was led by Brian Sanborn as he finished with a pair of victories and a second place finish for the Tars. The newcomer won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:04.09 and took the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.22. He was also runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:32.52.
Scott Barbee won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.85 and was second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.15. Colby Loetz added a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Nathan Burn won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.04 and teamed with Billy Shugart, Loetz and Kamel Tejeda to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:20.32.
Leandra Lima had a hand in three Tars victories for the women, sweeping the backstroke events and swimming anchor on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. She posted a time of 1:01.30 in the 100-yard backstroke and went 2:13.35 in 200-yard. Lima then teamed with Jenny Nilson, Stephanie Decker and Samantha Sigaty to post a time of 3:46.25 in the relay. To start the day, she teamed with Katie Gentsch, McFadden and Sigaty to finish second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:55.89.
McFadden was a double winner in the individual events with a victory in the 200-yard fly in 2:14.03 and the 200-yard IM in 2:18.41. Grace Alexander was also a winner, taking the 500-yard freestyle 5:30.74 while Nilson was a close second in 5:31.93. Nilson led the way in the 1000-yard freestyle, taking second in 11:22.63. Christine Bianco recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200-freestyle (2:04.17) and the 100-yard fly (1:03.37).
