Men's and Women's Swimming Tops Rollins in SSC Meet

Sharks post two wins over Tars' men’s and women’s teams

– The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming teams posted tandem wins over the Rollins Tars on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Aquatic Center. The women’s team won 118-84, while the men’s team remained undefeated in conference action with a 129-66 win over the Tar men.

"We were up against a team with a great history of tradition and I was pleased to see the Sharks step up to their abilities and show their Shark pride with their wins today," head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron said.

Ashley Aranda (Jr., Kenner, La.), Ewa Jamborska (Jr., Katowice, Poland), Nichole Schultz (Fr., Roseville, Calif.) and Nicole Gaynor (So., Orlando, Fla.) opened the day with a win in the women’s 200-yard medley relay. The Sharks’ quartet finished with a season-best time of 1:53.06 improving the previous time of 1:53.70. Devin Martin (So., Duluth, Ga.), Christine Parsons (Fr., Navarre, Fla.), Marissa Leonard (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Ashley Bransford (Fr., Santa Cruz, Aruba) finished with the second best time in the relay at 1:57.09 as an exhibition.

In the men’s 200-yard medley relay, Illya Prikhodko (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) Jonathan Key (Fr., Biltmore Lakes, N.C.), Darren Rubenchik (Fr., Ontario, Canada) and Nathan Caldwell (Fr., Naples, Fla.) took top spot with a time of 1:42.79. NSU’s “B” relay finished third at 1:44.61 behind the efforts of Tyler Wilson (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.), Nic Howell (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.), John Michael Hayes (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Eddie Bandi (Fr., Valrico, Fla.).

In the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle, Rollins’ Jenny Nilson took first place, but NSU’s Kelly Yakymiw (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) finished second with a time of 19:12.23 besting her season time almost 0:05 seconds. Kristen Ghandour (Fr., South Neptune Beach, Fla.) finished fifth at 22:09.55. In the men’s 1,650-yard free, Jonas Grundstrom (Jr., Fagersta, Sweden) returned to form with the win and a new season-best time of 16:28.15. Chris Norris (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) finished second at 16:58.79.

Bransford led the charge in the women’s 200-yard freestyle with another season-best time of 1:59.36 for the win. Aranda followed in second place finishing at 1:59.59, while Rollins took third through fifth. On the men’s side, Caldwell posted his first win of the season finishing with a time of 1:47.76. Key (1:50.62) finished third and Bandi (1:50.85) finished fourth to round out the top NSU men.

Gaynor continued her solid performance in the sprint freestyle events picking up a win in the women’s 50-yard free with a time of 0:24.98. Alexandra Zatylny (Fr., Quebec, Canada) followed in third place at 0:26.21, while Leonard (0:26.79) finished fifth. Ash Dougan (Jr., Tewksbury, England) took first place on the men’s side posting a season-best time of 0:21.51, which barely missed the NCAA “B” provisional qualifying time of 0:21.31. Jorge Ospina (Jr., Lazumillos, Venezuela) finished second at 0:21.52, while Prikhodko (0:23.80) finished fifth.

In the women’s 200-yard individual medley, Jamborska (2:13.34) finished with the top time for NSU followed by Schultz (2:18.72) who finished second. Parsons (2:23.25) finished third, while Yakymiw’s exhibition time of2:26.49 was good enough for fourth. On the men’s side, Hayes picked up his first win of the season finishing with a time of 2:03.47 in the same event. Duran (2:04.30) finished just under a second back in second place, while Eric Brothman (Fr., Laurel, Md.) finished third at 2:05.50. Wilson swam an exhibition time of 2:07.25 which was good enough for fifth.

After a 10-minute intermission, the Sharks were back at it with a second place finish by Schultz (1:00.86) in the women’s 100-yard butterfly. Martin (1:03.70) finished second. On the men’s side, the Sharks took first through third places with Ospina leading the way at 0:52.50. Rubenchik (0:54.77) finished second and Hayes (0:55.32) finished third. Brothman’s exhibition time of 0:57.34 was good enough for fifth best.

Gaynor (0:55.14) and Zatylny (0:56.51) took first and second respectively in the women’s 100-yard freestyle sprint. For the men, Dougan (0:48.29) and Caldwell (0:49.27) also took first and second respectively. Josh Anderson (Fr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) finished fifth at 0:52.03).

In the women’s 100-yard backstroke, Aranda picked up a win with her season best time of 1:01.61. Parsons (1:05.08) finished third and Martin (1:05.48) finished fourth. Yakymiw swam an exhibition time of 1:09.11. Prikhodko took first place in the men’s 100-yard back with a time of 0:54.84, while Rubenchik (0:56.41) finished third and Wilson (0:59.73) finished fifth.

Leonoard posted her personal best time of 5:26.90 in the women’s 500-yard freestyle to take first place, while Ghandour (6:17.94) finished fourth. In the men’s 500-yard free, Ospina edged out distance specialist Grundstrom with a time of 4:50.61 to finish first. Grundstom (4:51.89) finished second, while Norris (4:57.51) rounded out the top three. Duran finished fifth with an exhibition time of 5:10.03.

Coming out of the second and final break of the afternoon, Jamborska posted another win for the women in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:07.99. Bransford (1:09.83) finished second and Parsons (1:13.89) finished third. In the men’s 100-yard breast, all three Sharks raced as exhibitions. Howell posted top time at 1:03.10 followed immediately by Key at 1:03.82. Anderson rounded out the NSU men at 1:09.15.

The Sharks finished out the day with exhibitions swims in both the men’s and women’s 800-yard freestyle relay. Zatylny, Martin, Leonard, and Bransford bested their season time by over 0:08 seconds with a time of 8:10.49, which was also top time. The men’s “A” relay of Dougan, Bandi, Duran and Grundstrom posted top time at 7:24.56, while Brothman, Wilson, Howell and Norris finished with the third best time at 7:58.71.

"Our team performed very well after making some technique changes in practice this week,” Bonewit-Cron said. “We were faster in some areas, but will still need to get better with our mechanics. Overall we did an outstanding job with a team that is still growing."

The NSU men will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 13 taking on Indian River and Texas A&M in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Although the women will be off next weekend, both teams will return to the NSU Aquatic Complex on Monday, Dec. 13 hosting Carleton in a dual meet.
