MELBOURNE, Fla. (Feb. 20, 2010) - Teddy Tassy (So. Boca Raton, Fla.) sank a game-tying three-pointer with 34 seconds left in the second half, sending the game into overtime, but Nova Southeastern University men's basketball team was unable to hang to Florida Tech and fell 70-69 at the Clemente Center on Saturday.
Florida Tech led throughout the opening part of the first half, going up by as many as six with a Simon Cummings layup at 14:49 that made it 13-7. However, NSU chipped away at the Panthers' lead, using a pair of Alex Gynes (Jr., Nowra, Australia) free throws to go up 17-16 at 11:19.
The Panthers regained the lead and were ahead by three on two occasions, before the Sharks used a 14-0 run over a four-minute span to take a 38-27 lead with 2:05 left in the half. Florida Tech ultimately cut NSU's lead down to four as the teams entered halftime with the Sharks ahead 40-36.
NSU trailed throughout much of the second half, but not by much. The largest lead the Panthers took was a seven-point advantage on an Alvin Tucker three that made it 62-55 with 4:44 to go. However, a jumper by Gynes, a layup by Lemar Dyer (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and Tassy's three erased Florida Tech's seven-point lead.
The score remained deadlocked at 62-all for the first minute-and-a-half of overtime. Florida Tech scored the first points of the extra session and eventually got up to a four-point, 68-64 lead with 1:08 to go. NSU erased that deficit. Rob Huntington (So., Perth, Australia) made It a two-point game with a layup at 51 seconds. Then Brian Cahill (Fr., Arlington, Va.) made a layup, drew a foul against Florida Tech and made the free throw to give the Sharks a 69-68 lead. However, Cummings sank two foul shots with four seconds left that lifted the Panthers to the win.
NSU shot 40.4 percent for the game, going 23-for-57. Florida was 24-for-57 and shot 42.1 percent. Both teams had 39 rebounds.
Cahill and Gynes led the Sharks with 14 points a piece. Huntington added in 13, while Tassy had 10. Ross Allsop (Jr., Sydney, Australia) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Cummings scored a game-high 27 points. Donovan Woodson and Tucker had 11 and 10 points, respectively, and each grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
NSU returns to action this Wednesday when the Sharks travel to Palm Beach Atlantic. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
