FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Aug. 9, 2010) – Nova Southeastern University Swimming and Diving Head Coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron has hired Benjamin Hewitt as the program’s first assistant coach.
“I'm excited to have Coach Hewitt join our staff,” said Coach Bonewit-Cron. “His experience with both coaching and recruiting will make our team successful in the short term and continue to thrive in the long term. He will be a great addition to our swimming & diving program and the NSU family. I am confident his expertise will only help the team flourish.”
Hewitt was brought on after serving last season as the Assistant Men's Swimming Coach at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
While at Wabash, Hewitt was involved in the development of practice sessions and workouts for the stroke and sprint training groups, recruiting and the creation of a dynamic season-long dryland program for a team of 24 student-athletes. During his time with the Little Giant squad, the program posted a team high third place finish in the competitive North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. Four school records were set, two athletes participated at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis earning Academic All-America Honors and the program was recognized as a Scholar-Athlete team by the CSCAA.
Hewitt's coaching resume also includes a stop at perennial Division III powerhouse Kenyon College during the 2006-2007 season. Assisting both the men and women's program, the Lords and Ladies captured NCAA team titles at the Division III Championship meet in Houston, TX while taking a total of 16 individual and relay event titles.
Additional team accomplishments during the 2006-2007 season include multiple All-America Awards, the NCAA Men's Swimmer of the Year, both the men's and women's NCAC team titles and NCAC Swimmers of the Year. Hewitt contributed significantly to both programs by coordinating recruiting for the men's team, developing the strength and lifting program for the sprint training group, conducting practice sessions, creating an interactive DVD library of various Kenyon meets and organizing team travel.
Hewitt began his coaching career as the Assistant Men's Swimming Coach at Wabash College (2005-2006) and as a coach and camp counselor with both Total Performance Swim Camps and Indiana University Swim Camps. He also spent time working with prestigious sports organizations like the San Francisco Giants, the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. and Northern California based non-profit, Positive Coaching Alliance.
The Greenwood, Indiana native received his B.A. from Wabash College in 2005 where he was a four-year member of the Little Giant swimming and diving team. In the pool, Hewitt was an All-Conference performer in the breaststroke events and served as team captain his senior season. He was also named MVP his junior year and received two Mental Attitude Awards during his time on the Wabash campus.
An active member of the community, Hewitt was a play-by-play and color commentator for Little Giant football and basketball. He also served as swim team representative to the SAAC and worked as a tour guide with the Admissions Office.
Hewitt has been a competitive swimmer and coach at multiple levels for over 20 years.
