FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (1-2) will play the last of back-to-back games against Florida Sun Conference opponents as the Sharks face Ave Maria (2-2) Saturday, Nov. 19 at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center at 4 p.m.
The Sharks will look to go 2-2 over their first eight days of the 2011-12 season. The Sharks started the year off at the 6th annual NSU Tip-Off Classic where they played games on back-to-back nights. On opening night, NSU fell to Columbus State, 69-64, despite having a chance to tie the game on multiple possessions in the final minute. The Sharks bounced back with an 88-77 win over Valdosta State in which the Sharks led by as much as 20 points. It was a revenge win as the Sharks travelled to Valdosta State last season and lost an epic double-overtime battle, 113-103.
With the team moving in the right direction, the Sharks ran into a buzz saw in their Thursday night matchup on the road against Northwood, the top team in the NAIA. The Sharks fell behind early but stayed in the game in the opening half. In the second, the Sharks fell victim to Northwood’s 30-10 run as NSU went on to lose, 87-69.
Despite Thursday’s result, there have been many positives at the start of the season.
Teddy Tassy (Sr., Port-au-Prince, Haiti) was named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week after his performance in the NSU Tip-Off Classic. Tassy, who is averaging 12.7 points per game on 53 percent shooting this year, is only the second player over the last five years to earn the honor. The last time a Shark received player of the week honors was when Tim Coenraad earned it in February of 2009.
The season has also displayed great growth in
Lukas Roesch’s (Jr., Sugar Grove, Ohio) game. The expected starters ahead of Roesch were unavailable at the start of the season, leaving Roesch to breakout into the team’s top scorer. Roesch is averaging team-highs with 15 points and six rebounds. Roesch is scoring in efficient fashion, draining 17 of 33 field goal attempts for a .515 shooting percentage.
Thursday’s game will also mark the home debut for
Robert Huntington (Sr., Perth, Australia), who has sat out of the first two games of the season. The expected starting center returned in limited fashion against Northwood, scoring a team-high 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting. He also recorded three blocks and two steals.
