FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (12-12, 5-9 SSC) will look to snap a four-game skid this Wednesday, Feb. 23 when the Sharks face the Lynn Fighting Knights at 7:30 p.m.
The Sharks are coming down the home stretch as there are only two games until the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The Sharks will face Lynn Wednesday and wrap up the regular season at home Saturday against Florida Southern.
Last time out, the Sharks let a road win against a top-four SSC team slip away in overtime against Tampa, 91-82. The Sharks shot better than 50 percent from the field over the first 40 minutes but could not close out the Spartans in regulation. In overtime, the Sharks failed to make a field goal as they were outscored, 13-4.
Senior forward
Alex Gynes (Nowra, Australia) nearly duplicated his career-best night against Valdosta State by matching a career-high 30 points while corralling 14 rebounds, one short of his career best. Gynes shot 11-for-17 from the floor and scored eight points at the free throw line.
The Sharks will face a Lynn opponent that has struggled in SSC play this year. However, both teams have clinched a spot in the SSC tournament and are competing with each other for a higher seed. NSU, Barry, and Lynn are locked into the 6-8 seeds but their order has not been determined.
The Sharks control their own destiny between the three teams as a 2-0 record will clinch a sixth seed. However, a loss against Lynn will place all three teams in a three-way tie at 5-10 headed into the final weekend. When the Sharks host FSC Saturday, Barry will travel to Saint Leo while Lynn will visit Rollins.
NSU last faced Lynn in Boca Raton, Fla. on Jan. 19 and won, 78-69. Gynes posted a game-high 24 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Robert Huntington (Jr., Perth Australia) led the Sharks with eight rebounds along with 13 points.
SSC Standings: At 12-2, Rollins is a win or a Florida Southern loss away from winning the SSC regular season title. FSC, 10-4, sits a half game ahead of Eckerd (10-5) and a game ahead of Tampa (9-5). Florida Tech sits in fifth place at 8-6 and can still move into a higher seed and a home game in the first round. NSU stands at 5-9, just a hair ahead of Barry (5-10) and Lynn (4-10). Saint Leo has a 1-13 record, locking up last place in the SSC.
