No. 22 Women’s Tennis Comes From Behind to Defeat No. 28 Florida Tech, 5-4

Dominique Wimmer Defeats No. 24 Katarina Huba in No. 1 Singles

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
– The No. 22 Nova Southeastern University women’s tennis team (9-6, 4-1 SSC) came from behind to slip by the No. 28 Florida Tech Panthers (12-6, 2-4 SSC), 9-0, on Saturday, March 26 at the NSU Tennis Complex.

“Our players played well today,” head coach Michael Coleman said. “We had some big wins against some good competition today.”

Dominique Wimmer (Jr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) come back from after falling in the first set to claim victory in No. 1 singles against No. 24 Katarina Huba. Wimmer lost the first set, 6-0, before finding her rhythm in the second set for a, 6-0, win. Wimmer continued her hot hand into the third set, never falling behind and earning her eighth victory of the season and first against a ranked opponent, 0-6, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, Paige Lindsley (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and sophomore Austin Lavallii (Williamston, Mich.) continued their dominance in No. 3 singles. The duo defeated Abbey Keister and Alexis Weinnig, 8-2, for their 13th win as a team this year.

Wimmer and Kamryn Blackwood (Fr., Farmington, N.M.) found themselves in an early hole in the No. 1 doubles match and were never able to recover, falling to Huba and Kristina Huba, 8-0. The international duo of Daria Burobina (Fr., Moscow, Russia) and Federica Longo (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina) went back and forth in their match, but in the end fell to Abigal Greif and Monica Price in the the No. 2 spot, 9-7.

The Sharks entered singles play in a hole for the eighth time this season. NSU have shown weakness when trailing after doubles action with a 3-5 record this season, but proved today that they can fight back in singles, winning three of their four matches in straight sets.

Burobina found her stride early in her match and never let it go, defeating Huba, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 slot for her eighth singles victory of the year. Lavallii blanked Stephanie Dohner in the first set of No. 5 singles, 6-0, eventually earning her sixth win in singles play this season, 6-0, 7-5. Longo rounded out the victories for NSU, defeating Wennig in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Blake Bauer (So., Miami, Fla.) and Oksana Krutiyenko (Sr., Novo Kahovka, Ukraine) were able to take their matches to third sets, but both fell short of victory. Krutiyenko got off to a good start, defeating Price, 6-3, in the first set, but lost all of her momentum after falling in the second set, 6-0, and fell 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot. Bauer fought back in the second set to even the match, but could not keep up with Keister in the in the third set, eventually falling 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

This marks the second victory in a row for the Sharks at the NSU Tennis Complex.

NSU takes six days off before welcoming the No. 3 Lynn Fighting Knights to the NSU Tennis Complex on Friday, April 1 at 2 p.m.
