FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern athletic department and the International Etiquette Centre teamed up to host the second annual NSU Upperclassmen Student-Athlete Career Workshop, held at Grande Oaks Golf Club.
Over 50 NSU student-athletes were in attendance at the event coordinated by Cristie Ledon, the graduate assistant for Student-Athlete Academic Services, as well as Dr. C.A. Tolchinsky, Manager of Student Athlete Academic Services. The workshop focused on covering social and business skills necessary to succeed in the business world today.
Elena Brower, the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the International Etiquette Centre, led NSU student-athletes through activities that focused on the following skills: the art of introduction, wining handshakes, personal image, how to dress for business, what to do with your body art, technology etiquette, social media pitfalls, email and texting protocol, table manners, and business meals. The night was filled with a plethora of information meant to teach each student-athlete the tools for the success as they begin to enter the professional business world.
“It was a great learning experience,” commented Deirdre Long (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.) of the women’s soccer team. “I feel like I’m taking home several tips that I could use to get ahead of the competition once I graduate and go out into the business world.”
The event also featured a three-course dinner served in conjunction with the workshop in order to give the student-athletes a hands-on learning experience on how to conduct themselves throughout a business meal.
“I attended this workshop last year as a junior and feel that I learn more each time,” said Teddy Tassy (Sr., Port-au-Prince, Haiti) of the men’s basketball team. “Events like these really help prepare us for life after college and give us a huge advantage over the intense competition. Especially in today’s economy, it’s really helpful to have this opportunity.”
