LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (3-3) played a close first half, but ultimately could not hold off the No. 5 Bellarmine Knights (8-0) in a 75-48 loss to wrap up the Fern Valley Hotel Classic Saturday.

The game wrapped up a solid weekend for the Sharks, who upset No. 7 Southern Indiana Friday, 77-76. The Sharks played the Knights close in the first half, but could not hold back the hot-shooting Knights in the second period.

“Our guys just ran out of gas, that’s the only way I can describe it,” said head coach Gary Tuell. “Our team played hard and gave everything they had this weekend.”

Iran Hollis (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) led the Sharks with a team-high 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. Lukas Roesch (Sr., Sugar Grove, Ohio) dropped in nine points and collected a team-best six rebounds.

The first half was a close defensive struggle, where the Sharks led for the first six minutes of the contest. Bellarmine took their first lead at 12-10 and never trailed through the half. NSU hit a cold spell and struggled from the field, but the defense kept the Knights in striking distance.

NSU shot 7-for-23 from the floor in the first half, but held Bellarmine to 10-for-26 shooting. Bellarming led for the majority of the first period, but never by more than five points.

The Sharks’ shooting woes continued in the second half, but this time the Knights took advantage. NSU went over four minutes without its first second-half field goal. Bellarmine built a big lead and outscored the Sharks, 17-3, over the first five minutes of the half.

Bellarmine established a 20-point lead just after the 10 minute mark at 57-37. The Sharks improved their shooting tough down the stretch, but could not chip away at the lead against a home team that rarely missed. The Knights shot a blistering 17-for-27 from the field, good for 63 percent, and 12-for-17 from 3-point range.

Stian Berg (So., Baerum, Norway) scored seven points in the contest, while Brian Cahill (So., Arlington, Va.) scored five points and brought down four boards.

The Sharks will return home to the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center on Tuesday to play Morningside at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on Radio X 88.5.
