FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 24 Nova Southeastern University women’s tennis team (3-1, 1-1 SSC) fell in a Sunshine State Conference match to Saint Leo (4-2, 1-2 SSC), 7-2, on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the NSU Tennis Complex.
“They were an excellent team,” head coach
Michael Coleman said. “We got off to some good starts in matches, but just could not maintain any momentum.”
Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) and
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) tallied the only doubles win for the Sharks. The duo defeated Maria Benkirane and Caroline Ebner, playing in the No. 2 spot (8-1).
Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) and No. 44
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) kept their match close, but lost momentum against No. 12 doubles team Emily Singleton/Laura Kemkes, falling, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles.
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) and
Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) struggled to find rhythm from the start of their match, eventually falling, 8-2, in the No. 3 slot.
The Sharks headed into singles play in a hole for the first time this season. In singles action, Longo won her pro-set match against Ebner (8-1), playing in the No. 6 spot.
Johannson won her first set, playing in the No. 2 spot, (6-4) against Singleton, but was unable to prevail in the second, falling (4-6). She eventually lost in the tiebreaker (4-6; 6-4; 8,10).
Also in singles competition, Kemkes defeated Wimmer (6-2, 6-1) in the No. 1 spot. Adrianna Daszkiewicz had a (6-2, 6-0) win over Burobina at No. 3 singles, while Jeanette McDonald defeated Cote (6-0, 6-0) at No. 4 singles. Lavallii also fell in No. 5 singles slot (6-2, 6-4), playing against Benkirane.
The Sharks will travel to Florida Southern to continue conference play Feb. 25, in Lakeland, Fla. at 10 a.m.
