Tennis Hits the Road for Two Conference Matches

The Sharks face-off against No. 9 Rollins and No. 10 Florida Southern.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Splitting its first two conference games, the No. 24 Nova Southeastern University tennis team (3-1, 1-1 SSC) will travel to Lakeland, Fla. to play No. 10 Florida Southern (1-3, 1-2 SSC) on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. and No. 9 Rollins (1-2, 1-1 SSC) on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 12 p.m. in Winter Park, Fla. 

Last time out, the Sharks upset Tampa, 6-3, with three wins in singles action and swept the competition in doubles, outscoring the Spartans, 24-7. Senior Dominique Wimmer (Guntramsdorf, Austria) picked up her first win of the season in singles action, defeating her opponent in the No. 1 spot (6-1, 6-0).

In game two, the Saint Leo Lions defeated the Sharks, 7-2. The Sharks headed into singles play in a hole for the first time this season, as they lost two out of the three doubles matches. Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) tallied the only doubles win for the Sharks. In singles action, Longo won her pro-set match (8-1), playing in the No. 6 spot.

“After our setback last week, we look to turn things around,” said head coach Michael Coleman. “We made some changes to stimulate the team to work towards their goals.”

Florida Southern
NSU has a 5-10 all-time record against the Mocs, losing the match last season in the Sunshine State Conference Quarterfinals, 5-1. The Mocs, ranked fifth in the south region, are coming off a 9-0 loss to No. 1 Lynn.

Doubles team Sabine Gorge/Magda Riutort are ranked No. 20 in the nation, and fifth in the region. In singles play, Gorge is ranked 12th in the region.

Rollins
The Sharks own a 3-8 all-time record against the Tars. In the last match against Rollins, the Tars defeated NSU, 7-2, at the NSU Tennis Center on April 3, 2011.  

Rollins, who is ranked fourth in the region, are coming off a win against Tampa on the road, outscoring the Spartans 6-3. No. 26 Lisa Loft is expected to play in the No. 1 spot, facing off against NSU’s No. 44 Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) who is slated to make her debut in the top spot in the lineup.
