BOX SCORE

LAKELAND, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (9-11, 4-7 SSC) fell to 1-1 against Florida Southern (13-7, 6-5 SSC) this season, as the Sharks lost to the Mocs, 94-85, Saturday in Lakeland, Fla.

Iran Hollis (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) had a career night by posting personal-bests with 26 points and 13 rebounds. He shot 9-for-12 from the floor and 8-for-8 from the foul line. Hollis also dished out four assists, one short of Shaun Pratl (Jr., Chicago Ridge, Ill.), who had a team-best five. Pratl shot 5-for-6 en route to 11 points.

The Sharks controlled the action out of the gate as the Sharks led for the majority of the first half. The Sharks would lead by as much as six points 10 minutes into the game as they had one of the most efficient shooting halves of the season. The Sharks shot 72 percent (13-for-18) in the half and nailed three of their six 3-point attempts.

The Mocs stayed in the game as NSU committed 13 turnovers. The Mocs were able to take 14 more field goal attempts in the half and took a three point lead, their largest at the time, heading into the break. Hollis had 10 of his 26 points in the opening half, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor.

The Sharks’ shooting percentage came back down to Earth in the second half while the Mocs continued to maintain their hot shooting. Florida Southern did not allow the Sharks to retake the lead at all in the second half and led by as much as 11 points with nine minutes remaining. The Sharks would cut that deficit down to as low as three points with less than five minutes remaining, but they could not erase the home team’s lead.

Tim Traversa  (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and Jacob Reed (So., Perth, Australia) each scored 11 points in the contest. Traversa shot 4-for-6 from the floor while Reed went 3-for-5. Robert Huntington (Sr., Perth, Australia) scored 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting.

The Sharks will stay on the road as they face the Florida Tech Panthers in Melbourne, Fla. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
