FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 24 Nova Southeastern University tennis team (1-0) defeated State College of Florida (0-1), 5-4, on Sunday, Feb. 5 at the NSU Tennis Center.
In the first match of the season against the Manatees, head coach
Michael Coleman changed his usual lineup to see how some of his other players reacted on game day situations.
In singles action, junior
Federica Longo (Buenos Aires, Argentina), defeated her No. 4 opponent Lacey Lapp (6-2, 6-2). Celebrating her Sharks singles debut with a two set victory,
Andrea Wise (Fr., Ashland, Ore.), defeated Mia Popaja (6-2, 6-1), playing in the No. 5 spot. The Sharks collected another point in singles, as the Manatees didn’t bring a player for the No. 6 spot.
Also making her Sharks singles debut was freshman
Charlotte Cote (Montreal, Canada). She fell (2-6, 2-6) playing against Lai Wei in the No. 1 spot.
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) battled Laurence Porry in No. 2 singles. Burobina won the first match 6-0, but could not pull off the upset, eventually falling, 4-6, 4-10.
NSU split doubles play with the Manatees and took the third win with a forfeit from the other team.
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) and Cote recorded an 8-4 victory playing in the No. 2 spot. The international duo of senior
Dominique Wimmer (Gunstramdorf, Austria) and No. 44
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia), were defeated by Porry and Lai Wei in the No. 1 spot. The Sharks collected another point in doubles, as the Manatees didn’t bring a team for the No. 3 spot.
In their next match, the Sharks host the St. Thomas Bobcats at the NSU Tennis Center on Saturday, February 11 at 2 p.m.
