The Sharks put themselves in an early hole Saturday as they were swept by the Argos in doubles play. The closest match came in the top flight, as
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) went down the wire with Caitlyn Baines and Sheila Smiley, but lost, 9-8.
In the second doubles flight,
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) and
Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) dropped their match, 8-4, to Barbara Oliveira and Mariana Sonnervig. In No. 3 doubles,
Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) and
Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) played a competitive match, but lost to Luiza Sonnervig and Hannah Durham, 9-7.
The Sharks were more competitive in singles play and split the results, 3-3. Wimmer had the most dominant win for the Sharks, dispatching Mariana Sonnervig in No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1. In the top flight, Johansson won two close sets and took the match against Oliveira, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8). Burobina competed in the No. 4 slot and earned a come-from-behind victory over Smiley. Burobina lost the first set, 3-6, before regrouping and taking the second, 6-4. She rode her momentum into the tiebreaker, winning 10-3.
Unfortunately, the Sharks did not get the five singles wins they needed to climb out of their 3-0 hole. Luiza Sonnervig, who entered the season as the third-ranked player in the South Region, defeated
Bianca Roberts (Fr., Fort Walden Beach, Fla.) in the No. 3 slot, 6-2, 6-0. UWF won the final two singles flights, as Baines defeated Lavallii, 6-2, 6-0, and Naomi Higa beat
