No. 26 Tennis Shuts Out West Alabama, 9-0

Sharks earn widest margin of victory of the season.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 26 Nova Southeastern women’s tennis team (7-8) snapped a three-match losing streak Saturday, sweeping the West Alabama Tigers (7-6), 9-0, at the NSU Tennis Complex.

Although the Sharks won every match on the day, they were most dominant during doubles play. The only competitive match came in the top flight, as Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) defeated Lisa Becker and Jill Furlong, 8-6.

The other two NSU doubles teams made quick work of their completion. Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) teamed up with Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) to win, 8-1, against Angy Cuellar and Dasha Popova. In the No. 3 spot, Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.), who did not play in her usual top-flight doubles spot, partnered with Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) to shutout Emily Gerding and Courtney McDonald, 8-0.

Although Johansson played a close match in doubles play, she cruised through her singles match. In the No. 1 hole, Johansson double-bageled Natalia Cardenas, 6-0, 6-0. Wimmer played in her normal No. 2 spot and defeated Furlong, 6-4, 6-2. The Sharks dropped their only set of the day in the third flight. Lavallii won a tough three-set match against Cuellar, 6-2; 2-6; 10, 2.

In the No. 4 spot, Burobina won her third-straight singles match, 6-1, 6-2, against Becker. Longo, who sat out of singles play in the last two matches, won her fifth-flight match against Popova, 6-0, 7-5. Cote sealed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Gerding in the No. 6 spot.

The match represented NSU’ first shutout of the season and the first since the Sharks’ home defeat of Eckerd almost one year ago exactly on March 25, 2011.

The Sharks will return to Sunshine State Conference play, where they are 4-1, against Florida Tech Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Complex. If the Sharks win they will claim second place in the SSC with three conference matches remaining.
