No. 26 Tennis Falls to No. 36 Florida Tech, 8-1

Lavallii and Cote record NSU’s only win of the day.

The No. 26 Nova Southeastern tennis team (7-9, 4-2 SSC) broke a three-match winning streak in Sunshine State Conference play Tuesday, falling to the No. 36 Florida Tech Panthers (12-4, 3-3 SSC) at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Sharks recorded their only victory in the third doubles flight. Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.) teamed up with Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) for the second straight match and defeated Monica Price and Abbey Keister, 8-6.

The Sharks fell in a 2-1 hole after doubles play, as the lost in the first and second flights. In No. 1 doubles, Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) lost to the No. 6 doubles team in the country in Kristina and Katrina Huba, 8-2. Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) teamed up with Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) and lost a close match to Stephanie Dohner and Abigail Greif, 8-6.

The Sharks went winless in singles play but were competitive in every match. Half of the matches were decided in three sets while two others had sets decided by a tiebreaker. Johansson played in the top flight against Kristina Huba and lost, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Wimmer competed in the No. 2 spot and won her first set over Katarina Huba, the 11th ranked player in the country, 2-6. However, Wimmer lost the next two sets, each by a score of 6-3.

In No. 3 singles, Lavallii dropped her match to Price, 6-4, 6-3. In the next flight, Burobina lost a tiebreaker-decided first set against Greif, 7-6 (7-4), before being bageled in the second, 6-0. In the fifth flight, Longo dropped the first set against Dohner, 6-3, but rallied back to win the second, 4-6. She went on to fall in the final set, 6-3. Wrapping up singles play was Cote, who lost to Keister, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Sharks will end their six-match home stand this Thursday when they face Williams at 2 p.m.
