No. 18 Tennis to Compete in the Florida Blue SSC Tournament

Sharks will face Rollins in the opening round.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The No. 18 Nova Southeastern tennis team (8-13) will compete in the Florida Blue Sunshine State Conference Tournament in Lakeland, Fla. from April 19-21. The Sharks enter the tournament as the fifth seed and will take on fourth-seeded Rollins (11-9) in the first round Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

The SSC Tournament is a non-elimination tournament; with a back draw that settles who will be placed first through eighth. Therefore, regardless of the outcome the Sharks will play three tennis matches in the next three days.

The Sharks will enter this tournament with an odd sense of momentum. Although they enter the tournament after a loss against No. 2 Barry, they had the same fate as every team that has faced the undefeated Buccaneers this season. However, the Sharks played the Bucs very close, with multiple matches going to tiebreakers and third sets.

Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) furthered her case for SSC Freshman of the Year against Barry, going toe-to-toe against the top player from the SSC’s best team, Cristina Valladares. Johansson fell in a hole early, dropping the first set, 2-6, before bouncing back by taking two must-win sets, 6-4, 6-3. Prior to the match against Barry, the Sharks dismantled Palm Beach Atlantic, 6-3, at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Sharks proved they can defeat Rollins back when they beat the Tars, 5-4, on Feb. 26.The Sharks and Tars split singles play but took two out of three doubles matches to seal the victory.

If the Sharks defeat the Tars, they will face the winner of the Barry vs. Tampa match on Friday at 11:30 a.m. If they lose, the Sharks will face the loser of the same match in the backdraw at 2 p.m.
