FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 18 Nova Southeastern tennis team (7-11, 4-2 SSC) will look to make a splash Tuesday, as the Sharks travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on the No. 4 Lynn Fighting Knights (13-3, 5-1 SSC) at 6 p.m.
The Sharks currently rank third in the Sunshine State Conference behind Lynn and undefeated No. 2 Barry. Last season, Lynn and Barry competed against each other for a national championship. The teams are expected to be national contenders in the postseason this year as well. The Sharks will be attempting to change the script for the season by unseating the Fighting Knights.
NSU will attempt to be the only NCAA Division-II team not in the top-five in the nation to defeat Lynn. The Fighting Knights’ only other losses against D-II teams came from Barry and No. 4 Armstrong Atlantic. A win would also mark the first against Lynn in program history, as the Sharks are 0-11 against the Fighting Knights all-time.
Although the Sharks have a tall mountain to climb, they have the student-athletes to get the job done. The Sharks carry two of the South Region’s best players in
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and
Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria). The Sharks will also sport the seventh ranked doubles team in the region, the duo of Johansson and
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.). Johansson will likely be matched up against the nation’s third-best player in Ioana Ivan.
NSU will be attempting to snap a three-match losing streak. This past Saturday, the Sharks battled inclement weather in a neutral site match against St. Edwards. The Sharks lost the match held in Melbourne, Fla., 6-3.
If the Sharks rebound and shock the Fighting Knights, they will need to defeat Barry at home in order to seal the second seed in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament.
