BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 18 Nova Southeastern tennis team (7-12, 4-3 SSC) lost on the road to one of the elite teams in the nation Tuesday, falling to the No. 4 Lynn Fighting Knights (16-3, 7-1 SSC), 8-1, in Boca Raton, Fla.
The Sharks played close in doubles play and came within a few points of taking a 2-1 advantage into singles action. The Sharks picked up a victory in the third flight as
Dominique Wimmer (Sr., Guntramsdorf, Austria) and
Charlotte Cote (Fr., Montreal, Canada) won their fourth straight match as a team. The duo took out Andrea Berkova and Kim Przeszlowski, 8-6.
The Sharks had a close match in the second seed, as
Daria Burobina (So., Moscow, Russia) and
Federica Longo (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina) lost to Ana Kriz and Roxane Alexandru, 8-5. The Sharks’ top flight team of
Alexandra Johansson (Fr., Sydney, Australia) and
Austin Lavallii (Jr., Williamston, Mich.), the 27th ranked team in the nation, also dropped their match to the nationally ranked No. 3 team in Ioana Ivan and Sabine Krause, 8-2.
The most high profile match of the evening came in the top flight, when No. 27 Johansson faced her toughest competitor of the season in No. 3 Ivan. Ivan got the better of the Shark, winning, 6-1, 6-4. In the second flight, No. 44 Wimmer fell to No. 40 Krause. 6-3, 6-1.
The Fighting Knights continued to roll as they swept singles play. In the third seed, Cote lost to Przeszlowski, 6-2, 6-1. Burobina pulled an unusually tough fourth flight competitor in No. 18 Andrea Berkova. The sophomore lost, 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 5 spot, Lynn’s Kriz defeated Lavallii, 6-2, 6-3. In the final flight, Longo dropped her match to Alexandru, 6-1, 6-0.
The Sharks will look to rebound when they return home this Thursday against South Florida rival Palm Beach Atlantic at the NSU Tennis Complex at 3 p.m.
