FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (2-2-0, 1-0-0 SSC) won its conference opener against the Florida Tech Panthers (4-2-0, 0-1-0 SSC), 3-1, at the NSU Soccer Complex Saturday night.
With all three of the goals coming in the first half, the Sharks were able to put the match away early. The scoring started in the 18th minute of the match when
Malin Broberg (Jr. Stockholm, Sweden) took a shot from 25 yards out, catching the keeper out of position and putting the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.
The Sharks kept the scoring going in the 28th minute when
Melissa Madden (So. Vero Beach, Fla.) played a one-time pass to
Andi Burchfield (So, Greenville, S.C.), who crossed it into the middle to an open
Stephanie Moench (Fr. Austin, Texas). Moench was able to hit it out of the air and into the top right corner of the net to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead.
Keeping the pressure going, in the 34th minute Moench played a through ball between two Panther defenders and onto the foot of
Payton Van Horn (Fr. Jackson, Mich.) who slotted the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
The lone goal of the second half came in the 73rd minute off a shot from Chelsea Pushman from the top of the 18-yard box and into the top left corner of the net. Even with the FIT goal, the Sharks outshot their opponent 16-15 and looked to be in control throughout the 90 minutes.
Goalkeeper
Amanda Kopale (Fr. Cape Coral, Fla.) tallied six saves in the match, giving her and the team their second win of the season.
With this win, the Sharks will take a week off and face Eckerd on the road, Saturday Sept. 22 at 5 p.m, in a non-conference match.
