FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern soccer will return to Sunshine State Conference play this week, as both the men’s and women’s teams face the Florida Southern Mocs this week in Lakeland, Fla. The women get a crack at the Mocs first, facing them Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. The men face Florida Southern on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
Both teams will enter the match looking for redemption, as Florida Southern came to NSU earlier this season and swept the Sharks. Both the men’s and women’s matches had the same outcome back on Sept. 12, with the Sharks being the more active offensive team but falling, 1-0.
In the women’s match against Florida Southern, the Mocs put themselves ahead with two minutes left in the first half on a free kick in front of the box. Overall, the Sharks outshot the Moc’s,15-6, and beat them out in the number of corner kicks, 9-4. Eight of the Sharks’ nine corner kicks came in the second half.
On the men’s side, the Sharks took 24 shots in the contest, the most in a 90-minute match since the 2009 season. However, the Sharks could not find the goal, with only seven shots on target. The Sharks also took 12 corner kicks, tying for the program’s largest mark since the 2007 season. In comparison, Florida Southern finished the match with five total shots and two corner kicks taken. Florida Southern scored in the 71st minute on their last shot of the night.
Historically, the women have the slight upper-hand against opponents this week. Against FSC, the Sharks are 7-6-3 all time. However, they have been on a skid against the Mocs as of late, with their last victory coming in 2006. The men’s team hashad FSC’s number in the all time series, with a record of 14-6-1. The Sharks’ recent loss to Florida Southern snapped a three-year winning strake against the Mocs.
