No. 16 Tennis Travels to No. 5 Barry

Sharks look to move north of .500 in conference play.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 16 Nova Southeastern tennis team (3-3, 2-2 SSC) will travel south to face perennial NCAA National Championship contenders, the No. 5 Barry Buccaneers (6-0, 4-0 SSC), Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The Sharks are riding their first winning streak of the season after defeating No. 13 Rollins, 5-4, and Eckerd, 7-2, in their last two matches. The Sharks will need every bit of momentum, as they look to give Barry its first loss of the season. If the Sharks can win, it would be Barry’s first loss in the regular season since April of 2011.

The match will be the last in conference play for the next month for NSU. The Sharks will play their next eight matches against out-of-conference foes, including three teams at a spring break tournament in Orlando, Fla. A win Wednesday would cement a winning record in the Sunshine State Conference for the duration of that period, and likely leave NSU in the upper half of the standings until conference play returns on March 28 against Florida Southern.

The Sharks are likely to play a freshman-heavy lineup, with Sabrina Kierberg (Munich, Germany) a favorite to play in the top flight for both singles and doubles. Kierberg has recently found success in doubles with teammate Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.), as the tandem have gone 2-0 as the Sharks’ No. 1 doubles team.

Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) is also a possibility at the top of the Sharks’ lineup, as she returned to her normal position in her first singles win of the season against Eckerd. Johansson has had success against Barry, winning in the top singles match against the Bucs last year.
