MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (14-11, 6-9 SSC) dropped a road game against the streaking Florida Tech Panthers (15-10, 8-7 SSC), 90-82, Wednesday on the road.
Lukas Roesch (Sr., Sugar Grove, Ohio) led the Sharks Wednesday with 17 points on 50 percent shooting. He had six rebounds and two assists.
Iran Hollis (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) followed suit with 16 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
Justin Jeangerard (So., Weaverville, Calif.) collected a game-high seven rebounds and scored eight points.
Stian Berg (So., Baerum, Norway) scored 12 points and recorded career-highs with six rebounds and assists apiece.
“Other than the disparity in free throws, I thought that was a great college basketball game,” said head coach
Gary Tuell. “We obviously shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers, but give Florida Tech credit. Their defense was aggressive and active all night and they did a terrific job taking care of the ball. Their five starters might be better than their starting five that won the league last year. I thought Tubbs, Jackson, Reid and Carter were great. It was fun watching them play.”
The Sharks fell behind early against the Panthers, who’ve now won eight straight games. NSU committed seven turnovers in the first nine minutes, and trailed early, 23-12. However, NSU was able to shoot itself out of a hole and climbed back to within a point at halftime. The Sharks shot 14-for-29 in the opening half, including 7-for-16 shooting from 3-point range.
With the game up for grabs at the start of the second half, both teams improved on their already solid shooting marks. NSU shot 51.6 percent in the second half, while the home team shot 66.7 percent. The game remained close through the first 12 minutes of the period, with the score differential staying within six the entire time.
With Florida Tech leading, 64-62, the Panthers went on a 13-4 run to regain a double digit lead. The Panthers’ Terrence Tubbs scored all but one of those points, earning three on four-straight possessions. Florida Tech closed out the game at the foul line, shooting 9-for-10 from the stripe in the last two minutes.
NSU brought the deficit down to six points by draining four treys in the last 1:18 of the game, but did not have enough time to complete a comeback. The four triples push the Sharks to 17 3-pointers in the game, a new program record. The Sharks have now made 33 3-pointers in the last two games.
Sean Mullan (Sr., Mangerton, Australia) and
Maurice Fuller (So., Westfield, Ind.) each shot 50 percent and scored 10 and seven points, respectively.
Brian Cahill (So., Arlington, Va.) scored nine points on three treys.
“I’m proud of our guys, we competed and battled from behind, and if we could have gotten to the line a few more times and taken a little more care of the ball, the game easily could have gone our way,” said Tuell. “This game will help us get ready for the tournament next week.”
The Sharks will finish the regular season on Saturday against Barry in Miami Shores, Fla. at 5:30 p.m. The game will broadcast live on 640 Sports.
