FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team (11-8, 4-6 SSC) dropped their last of three straight home games Wednesday, as the Eckerd Tritons (13-5, 6-4 SSC) defeated the Sharks, 63-59, at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.
Iran Hollis (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) led the Sharks with a team-best 19 points on 9-for-15 shooting. He brought down a career-high 14 rebounds, three away from the single-game program record.
Sean Mullan (Sr., Mangerton, Australia) also played well, with a career-high 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting.
Lukas Roesch (Sr., Sugar Grove, Ohio) continued his recent streak of solid passing, with a team-best four assists.
I was proud of our guys tonight,” said head coach
Gary Tuell. “If we had played as hard as we did tonight in our last two games we would have won them. We played hard and well enough to win.”
The Tritons started off on fire, making seven of their first 12 3-pointers. During that streak, the road team built their biggest lead of the game at 25-12 with 9:49 left. From there until the break, the shooting streak cooled off and the Sharks climbed back in the game. The Sharks outscored Eckerd, 15-7, down the stretch of the first half, and at one point, were a missed 3-pointer away from taking the lead. Eckerd led, 32-27, at the break.
Eckerd played just as well in the first half and did just enough to protect their lead over the final 20 minutes. NSU tied the game at 32 apiece two minutes in, but Eckerd shot back with an 8-2 run to reestablish a lead they would never give up. NSU worked the lead down to three points with 10 seconds left, but Eckerd made their last four free throw attempts to ice the game.
The Sharks struggled to have calls go their way in the second half, with only four fouls called against Eckerd. The Sharks also committed nine turnovers in the second period after winning the turnover battle in the first.
On the night,
Brian Cahill (So., Arlington, Va.) shot 50 percent from the floor and scored 11 points.
Maurice Fuller (So., Westfield, Ind.) had eight points and career-best eight rebounds.
The Sharks will hit the road this Saturday to face the Sunshine State Conference’s top-team, the No. 8 Florida Southern Mocs, at 3 p.m. The game will broadcast live on 640 Sports.
