No. 16 Tennis Upset by Tampa, 7-2

Sharks fall in Sunshine State Conference opener.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The No. 16 Nova Southeastern tennis team (1-2, 0-1 SSC) fell in an upset to the Tampa Spartans (2-0, 1-0 SSC), 7-2, Saturday on the road.

The Sharks earned one win in singles play and doubles play. On a solid note, Alexandra Johansson (So., Munich, Germany) and Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Munich, Germany) teamed up for the first time and won their top-flight doubles match against Meg Wladimirski and Lauren Hewett, 9-7.

In singles play, Bianca Roberts (So., Tampa, Fla.) started conference play strong with a win in the sixth slot. She defeated Jenelle Morgan in a tight match, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. It was her second win of the season.

Outside of those two wins, it was a rough morning for NSU. The Sharks picked up two losses in the bottom-two doubles seeds. Senior Austin Lavallii (Williamston, Mich.) teamed with Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) and lost to Kelsey Matthews and Lindsay Nochowicz, 8-3. In the final flight, Roberts and Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) fell to Thashia Garcia and Chloe Pereira, 8-5.

In singles play, All-American Johansson continued to struggle, falling to Garcia, 6-3, 6-0. In the second seed, Kierberg made her collegiate singles debut and lost to Wladimirski, 6-3, 6-0. Rizzolo played to a tiebreaker against Hewett, but ultimately lost, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 10-7.

In the fourth slot, Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) lost to Nochowicz, 6-4, 6-3. Finally, Cote lost in the fifth flight to Matthews by the same score, 6-4, 6-3.

The Sharks will have to shake off the loss and compete Sunday on the road against Florida Tech at 10 a.m.
