No. 21 Tennis To Compete in SSC Tournament

Sharks draw No. 2 Barry in first round Thursday.

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The No. 21 Nova Southeastern tennis team is set to compete in the 2013 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the South County Regional Park in Boca Raton, Fla. The tournament begins Thursday, with the championship match scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Sharks drew a tough match in the first round, as they face No. 2 Barry, the undefeated top seed in the tournament, at 9 a.m. The match kicks off the entire tournament. Win or lose, the Sharks will move on to the semifinals or the backdraw on Friday. NSU faced Barry early in the season, falling 8-1, but the Sharks have improved significantly in doubles play since. After the match, Alexandra Johansson (So., Sydney, Australia) and Charlotte Cote (So., Montreal, Canada) have become the team’s rock in doubles play, where they have gone 9-2.

The sophomore duo is expected to compete in the top flight of doubles play. Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) will team up with Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Berlin, Germany) in the second draw while Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) and Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) will partner for the third draw. In their respective draws, those two teams are 4-0 this season. Doubles will be key for the Sharks in order to set the tone for singles play.

If the Sharks win, they will compete in the semifinal match on Friday at 9 a.m. The backdraw match will be scheduled for Friday at 11:30 a.m.

For those wishing to attend matches, admission is free. South County Regional Park is located at 11200 Park Access Road, Boca Raton, Fla.
