No. 21 Tennis Falls in SSC First Round to No. 2 Barry, 5-0

Sharks now move on to backdraw matches.

BOX SCORE

BOCA RATON, Fla. –
The No. 21 Nova Southeastern tennis team (7-12) lost its first-round match of the 2013 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament, falling to No. 2 Barry (22-0), the top seed in the tournament, 5-0, at the South County Regional Park.

The Sharks fell in a hole early, dropping all three doubles matches. In the top flight, sophomore duo Alexandra Johansson (Sydney, Australia) and Charlotte Cote (Montreal, Canada) lost to the nation’s eleventh ranked doubles team in Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila, 8-2.

In the second doubles draw, Sabrina Kierberg (Fr., Berlin, Germany) and Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) dropped a match to Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker, 8-1. The Sharks’ closest doubles match came in the third match, as Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.) and Luisa Pintado (Fr., Guadalajara, Mexico) fell to Karina Goia and Isabela Miro, 8-3.

Down by three points, the Sharks needed to have a fast start in singles play. In tournament play, the entire match ends once one team wins five points. Barry earned the two points they needed right away, leaving four matches incomplete.

The singles matches that did finish were in the second and third draws. Johansson lost her match against Emma Onila, 6-0, 6-2. In the final match of the day, Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.) lost to Linda Fritschken, 6-1, 6-1. Both of NSU’s singles opponents are nationally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Sharks will now compete in the backdraw of the SSC Tournament, where they will face Florida Southern Friday at 9 a.m.
