FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern tennis has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team and had five athletes named as Scholar Athletes, as announced by the association Tuesday.
The Sharks have become a staple on the ITA list of top academic programs and routinely have student-athletes honored as scholar athletes. This year's ITA Scholar Athletes are Kamryn Blackwood (Jr., Farmington, N.M.), Emily Hart (Fr., Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago), Linda Kornienko (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.), Austin Lavallii (Sr., Williamston, Mich.) and Carlee Rizzolo (Fr., Livingston, N.J.).
The Sharks are expected to have another stellar academic year in 2013-14. Four of the five Scholar Athletes are returning, with the lone graduating senior accepting the position of team graduate assistant.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2012 and spring 2013).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
