ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team dropped two matches on Saturday at the Eckerd College Classic, to UPR-Rio Piedras and Wilmington.

The Sharks (3-3) started out well, taking the first set against the Gallitos, 25-22. Sydney Cook (So., Miami) had three straight early kills and the set point, while Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) had five kills in the set.

Rio Piedras won the second set by 10, 25-15, and held off a furious Shark rally in the third. Trailing 23-14, Maison Burr (Fr., St. Clair, Mich.) stepped behind the service line and helped NSU to eight straight points, cutting it to a one-point deficit with an ace. But UPR got two straight kills to close out the set, and won the fourth set as well to take the match, 25-19.

Holger led the team with 17 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, with Cook next at 12 kills and a .296 percentage. Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) had 37 of the team's 41 assists, and Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.) had a team-high 12 digs.

In the second matchup, Wilmington had a straight-set victory, 25-16, 25-22, 25-14.

Just as in the opener, the middle set proved to be the turning point. It was back-and-forth early, and the Sharks led 12-11 before Wilmington scored six straight to take their biggest lead of the set. It was still a four-point Wildcat lead at 20-16, and though NSU went on a 6-2 run to knot it up at 22-22, Wilmington scored the last three points to win the set.

The Wildcats used a 10-2 run late in the third to effectively snuff out any possible Shark comeback, and earned the victory in a sweep.

Cook had the team-high in kills in match No. 2, with 12, Johnson had 13 digs, and Kristina Eric (Sr., Sokolac, Bosnia) had 16 assists.

The Sharks wrap up play in the Eckerd Classic on Saturday afternoon when they take on Bentley at 3:30 p.m. There will be live audio HERE, live video HERE, and you can follow along with Eckerd's live stats HERE.
