FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – On a gorgeous afternoon at the NSU Aquatic Center, the Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams made quick work of the visiting Rollins College Tars, sweeping all 28 events of the meet.
Rounding out their best opening weekend in program history, the Sharks impressed by swimming eight NCAA B-Standard times, recording four from the women's team and four from the men's.
Thiago Sickert (So., Vila Velha, Brazil) led the way with the Sharks best finish of the day, swimming a 48.12 in the 100-yard butterfly, good enough for a NCAA B-Standard time.
The meet started with a NCAA B-Standard time of 1:46.68 from the Sharks' women's 200-yard medley relay team consisting of
Emma Wahlstrom (So. Stockholm, Sweden),
Malin Westman (Fr. Harryda, Sweden),
Bryndis Hansen (So. Akureyri, Iceland) and
Emma Lawrenz (Sr. Mennetonka, Minn.). After winning the next four events, the Sharks were victors in the men's 200-yard freestyle, after Sickert swam a NCAA B-Standard time of 1:39.50. Wahlstrom would follow, recording a 57.81 in the women's 100-yard backstroke, which is her best time as a Shark.
The Sharks didn't let up from their ways, as they convincingly won the next five races before Hansen just missed a NCAA B-Standard time after swimming a 24.19 in the 50-yard free.
Michael Ragan (So. Dacula, Ga.) would soon follow with his best time of the year, swimming a 46.48 in the men's 100-yard free. Keeping up with her teammates, Westman would then achieve her best time of the year after swimming a 2:21.72 in the women's 200-yard breaststroke.
In the best meet of her young career,
Courtney DeVeny (Fr. Estero, Fla.) swam a personal best and a NCAA B-Standard time of 5:04.97 in the women's 500-yard free. She was quickly followed by the men's 400-yard free relay A-team consisting of Sickert,
Magnus Lundgren (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden),
Shane Kleinbeck (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) and Ragan, who closed the meet in style, posting a time of 3:05.13.
Both teams will be back in action on Nov. 8 when they travel to Fort Pierce, Florida to dual with Indian River State College. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
