Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's basketball team (1-0) started the season off right, taking down the Johnson Suns (2-5), 102-46, Friday in the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
The Sharks made 14 3-pointers against the Suns and shot 40 percent from distance, but the Sharks dominated with their revamped post play. Leading the way was newcomer
Harrison Goodrick (So., Sydney, Australia), who made his NSU debut with a 20-point performance on 6-for-8 shooting. He had six rebounds and was perfect from the foul line.
Brandon Patchan (So., Tampa, Fla.) used his size to have a benchmark night, with career-highs of 14 rebounds and 14 points.
Nick Rosa (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) also made his NSU debut Friday and scored 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting. He also brought down eight rebounds.
Justin Jeangerard (Sr., Weaverville, Calif.) scored 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting, all from 3-point range, and grabbed four boards.
Ryan Steed (Jr., Miami, Fla.) came off the bench to match his career high with 10 points and three steals.
The Sharks jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the first half against a Johnson squad spread thin. After NSU gave up Johnson's first field goal two and a half minutes in, NSU went on a 10-0 run that put the Sharks up 17 early. The Suns battled back, cutting the deficit to single digits with 12:41 left in the half, but NSU answered with two fast break buckets and another trey. The Sharks would lead at halftime, 50-25.
The blue and grey did not take their foot off the gas in the second half, and immediately went on a 15-3 run. NSU went into cruise control and continued to build the lead. The Sharks would lead by as much as 56 points at 100-44 with 2:11 remaining in the game. NSU worked the clock down from there, scoring just once more on a layup from Patchan.
NSU shot 56 percent in the contest (40-for-71) and made 14 3-pointers. The Sharks held Johnson to 16-for-54 from the floor and 7-for-26 from long range.
Mike Chalas (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) made his NSU debut Friday and scored eight points on 50 percent shooting from the floor while collecting a game-high four assists. Freshman
Troy Spears (Martinsville, Ind.) filled up his box score line, recording seven points, three rebounds and two steals.
NSU will look to follow up with a marquee matchup Saturday at NCAA Division I Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. The game, which tips off at 2 p.m., will broadcast live on ESPN3.
