TAMPA, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams took their talents to the west coast of Florida where they split with the University of Tampa. The women defeated the Spartans by a score of 164-98 while the men fell by a score of 135-127.
The women led off the meet, garnering a quick 11 points thanks to a first-place finish from the 200-yard medley relay A-team consisting of
Emma Wahlstrom (So., Stockholm, Sweden),
Malin Westman (Fr., Harryda, Sweden),
Emma Lawrenz (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Jordan Shows (Fr., Alta Loma, Ca.). Their time of 1:49.29 was followed by a 1:37.06 from the men's 200- medley relay A-team consisting of
Stephen Klein (Fr., Albuquerque, New Mexico),
Cheyenne Rodriguez (So., North Bay Village, Fla.),
Santiago Pombo (Sr., Bogota, Columbia) and
Shane Kleinbeck (Sr., San Antonio, Texas), good enough for second place.
Madison Yelle (Fr., Mansfield, Texas) would follow with a second-place finish in the women's 1000-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 10:53.53. Her freshman counterpart,
Edward Zacka (Bonita Springs, Fla.), swam to a second-place finish of his own, posting a time of 9:53.81 in the men's 1000-yard freestyle.
The Sharks would then rattle off three straight wins, as
Brooke Munion (So., Bethlehem, Pa.) swam a 1:55.95 in the women's 200-yard freestyle, while Kleinbeck swam a 1:42.66 in the men's 200-free followed by Wahlstrom who recorded a 59.63 to win the women's 100-yard backstroke.
After
Marco Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain) placed second in the men's 100-back with a time of 52.61, Westman would swim a first-place time of 1:05.89 in the women's 100-yard breaststroke. The Sharks would then win nine straight events starting with
Courtney DeVeny 's (Estero, Fla.) 2:09.26 time in the 200-yard butterfly.
Thomas Rutherford (Fr., North Port, Fla.) followed with a first-place finish in the men's 200-fly with a time of 1:55.77.
The attention turned to standouts
Bryndis Hansen (So., Akureyri, Iceland) and
Thiago Sickert (So., Vila Velha, Brazil), who each finished first-place in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a 24.15 and 21.01, respectively. The dynamic duo wasn't done there, as they each cruised to victory in the 100-yard freestyle with Hansen swimming a time of 52.99 on the women's side and Sickert swimming a time of 46.65 on the men's side.
NSU would then win the 200-yard backstroke, as Wahlstrom swam a time of 2:07.36 on the women's side and Aldabe swam a time of 1:53.67 on the men's side. Westman would follow with the lone NCAA B-Standard time of the day for the Sharks women, swimming a first-place time of 2:20.86 in the women's 200-yard breaststroke.
The women would win their next four events to close out the day while the men won three of their last five. Munion continued her winning ways, cruising to victory in the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.75, more than six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Kleinbeck then swam a first-place time of 4:41.20 in the men's 500-free.
Hansen and Sickert followed, each finishing well ahead of their competition in the 100-yard butterfly. Hansen swam a time of 58.56 on the women's side, while Sickert posted a NCAA B-Standard time of 50.08 on the men's side. The Sharks then swept the 200-yard individual medley after Westman swam a first-place time of 2:09.70 for the women and Aldabe recorded a 1:56.06 for the men.
NSU closed the meet with a first-place finish from the women's 400-yard freestyle relay A-team consisting of Wahlstrom, Hansen, Lawrenz and Shows. The men's 400-free relay A-team, consisting of
Magnus Lundgren (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden), Sickert,
Michael Ragan (So., Dacula, Georgia) and Kleinbeck followed with a second-place finish, swimming a time of 3:05.74.
The Sharks will take nearly a month off before they host their fifth annual Shark Invite starting on December 18
th.
